General Bigger Intercooler on JTD?

Hello Mark,
We do a large front intercooler for the Punto the
price is £450.00 + vat, we are currently on 20 working days from receipt of
order. Many thanks Keith Lycett Director.

Thanks for the reply :)

Forgot to ask, what sort of performance gains would I be expecting?

Hello Mark,
The intercooler when set up correctly is good for around a 28 bhp gain. Many thanks Keith Lycett Director

So are they saying that just changing the intercooler will give you a 28bhp gain??

The standard intercoooler is good for up to around 200bhp.

Yea i was going to say. The standard one on the JTD has been flow tested and isnt very restrictive at all. Granted its cooling characteristics arnt amazing compared to some after market ones, but i very much doubt you will gain 28BHP just buy putting in their inter cooler.

Hi,

Yes it probably would be more efficient at cooling, but it can only cool a bit below the ambient temperature outside. (ie, outside temperature, and then factor in the cooling effect of wind flowing through the cooler when travelling at speed) This would cause better combustion, but i would not have thought 28 BHPs worth on its own. The Standard inter cooler is pretty free flowing as it is, so I don't see restriction as much of a problem.

A larger internal volume inter-cooler on a punto JTD will cause turbo lag also. PLUS, unless its an inter cooler that is going to sit in the OEM inter coolers place, the extra pipework that will be needed to fit the inter cooler say in front of the rad will increase the air circuit volume. Again, causing lag.

Personally, i would only upgrade my inter cooler on the JTD if i was running serious power in it (ie over 200BHP)

i see you point re the power gains but thats not really what i was referring to. i was thinking more efficient than more power. better combustion so reduced smoke? also with the stilo jtd the ic is on the left so a lot of pipework where it is. if moved more central it may actually reduce pipework? so possibly no increase in lag but more dense air?

not sure where it is located on the punto standard.

Ah sorry mate, yea I see what you mean now! I was going at it from the power/bigger FMIC side of things.
In that case you wouldn't need a "bigger" inter cooler, just a better one as you said...more efficient! If you keep all the volumes the same or near enough, then you wont get any turbo lag and it would cool the air more efficiently, resulting in cooler intake temp and more efficient combustion/ cleaner burn. Power gains may be slight, responsiveness would be improved. The thing to look out for is the core design, as this is what provides the cooling capacity. Aluminium ones also provide more cooling capacity over standard.
If you were running a bigger turbo (or higher output), then you could also increase the volume of the IC without suffering turbo lag.
