Panda (Classic) Betty: the early 1000CL

Introduction

See this thread for the full story of how Betty ended up in my possession....

Anyway, thanks to blinkelephant -- who was her previous owner -- and VmanC -- who has kindly agreed to adopt her on a temporary basis, and sort out her foibles... -- she will soon be on her way to a good home...!

Here she is, earlier today, leaving for Vernon's workshop... :)

I can't wait to meet her...! (y)
Really looking forward to meeting Betty in the morning. The Oslo grey is one of my most favouritist colours as Del Boy might have said....

I don't know why, but it really suits the Panda. It looks neat next to Pippin, too; and, as purple haze and I discussed, earlier, the upholstery (which is the same as the seats I purloined from you...) -- which contains all manner of blues and turquoises, as well as a hint of Oslo in it -- matches superbly, and really pulls the eye in. Just lush...! :D

Glad the MOT went alright too - sorry I got distracted by the thought of real ale while getting your car tax ;) Don't get that round here (n)

Our local doesn't do decent beer; and our Post Office doesn't do car tax... -- so well worth a drive to Droxford. Took all of two minutes, too. No forms: just scans of barcodes, and Bob's your mum's brother...! (y)

Congratulations!! Betty looks absolutely stunning :worship:
She looks to be a different car to the one when she was first found.

Thanks! I was saying exactly the same to Vernon, this lunchtime. It's amazing the little gem he discovered underneath all that dust (and odd bit of rust...); and the transformation that's been wrought...! :worship:

Reminds me very much of the last brand new Panda I saw in a Fiat showroom in 1994. Can't say more than has already been said by others but it looks well

Thank you, too! I was a little 'precious', driving her home, at first: as she has a little of that showroom feel about her.... The first stone-chip I spot on the bonnet, I shall cry....

Glad the MOT went alright too...

Sorry: where are my manners? Forgot to say thank you...!

Thanks to VmanC (and me spending four hours cleaning and waxing her... -- and still missing a spot (or so I'm told...)), Betty was an absolute star at the NEC, this year. Lots of admirers, and even a few tentative purchasers...! :D

Still, as with all such things, a few very minor niggles to sort out; but still a wonderful car to own and be in. :woot:

Betty certainly deserved her place at the NEC. (y)

I'm so pleased we blew the initial plans for her out of the water and made her what she is today. Not only are you now caring for the oldest Mk2 Panda we know of, but also one of the prettiest! I'm very jealous. (y)

You should be very proud, as well. If it weren't for you (1) I wouldn't have realized her potential; and (2) she wouldn't have so many admirers...! :worship:

PS: I must remember to take a picture of her tailgate.... ;)

Betty will be going into winter storage, next weekend (see below) -- and I'm starting to feel a little precious about her....

In the meantime, I hope to have a fiddle with the idle -- i.e. having a sniff of carb cleaner (probably both Betty and I...!) -- and either circumcising or replacing the idle solenoid thingummy...!

She will be in a very, very large, almost empty barn, which has good air circulation; after being cleaned and dried thoroughly (I don't think she needs waxing again, just yet...); and then put in a high-quality Stormforce car cover (i.e. suitable for internal and external use...). :)

I know we've talked about what to do, etc. in the pampered Pandas thread; but I'm planning on leaving her there for two or three months, undisturbed: as (1) I don't want to bother my nice neighbours (who are doing this pro bono...); and (2) I don't want to keep taking the cover on and off, etc.. I shall be disconnecting the battery -- but have an emergency starter sat ready, just in case....

Questions
  1. Is there any real need for a damp trap? I don't want to have to go and keep emptying this; or putting refills in; or risk it overflowing, etc.. If I leave the front vents open, will this be enough/okay? (Remember... -- the barn is huge; has fresh air flowing through it; and Betty will be parked on a stone-flagged floor. The roof is solid -- although the occasional bird may poop from the rafters...! -- so no chance of rain or snow getting anywhere near her.)
  2. Handbrake on or off? My gut feeling is just to leave her in gear; and maybe put some chocks under the wheels (if these are really needed...?) -- as I don't think three months is long enough for the tyres to deform. (I'm not convinced, either, that the brakes will stick in such a short time... -- but you never know!)
  3. Anything else that I haven't thought of?
All advice welcome...! (y)

Definitely handbrake off. Brakes will probably stick on if not!!

Everything else should be ok. Tbh I just disconnect the battery, take the handbrake off & leave in gear. I'm sure there's all sorts of other stuff you could do, but that's my routine.

Oh and I always leave the car unlocked. I take the view that a Panda is easy to break into anyway, so if some idiot was to look for valuables (good luck!!) they might as well open the door rather than buggering up the locks/bending doors!

just pump the tyres up so they are higher than usual to help prevent flatspots. You can't beat taking them off the car but i never go that far. Agree with above, handbrake off and in gear and disconnect battery -ve terminal. Only other thing i would consider is if you can find a big chunk or chucks of dry wood stick some bits under the car and it draws moisture away from the car - they must be dry though or its less than pointless exercise.

Them stormforce covers are good though, got my dad one for christmas and it does a great job even outside of keeping car clean and dry etc.
