Looking at possibly getting back into a Cinq/Sei as a little run around/second car. I currently waft around in a Primera Estate which is fantastic for the baby and the dogs but is lacking in fun factor and I could do with something more economical for the run to work and back.

As much as I would love to drop a 1.2/1.4 16v engine in, I just haven't got the time to do it. I did a 1242 8v conversion a good few years ago which took me a week or two grabbing spare evenings and weekends here and there.

What I'm asking is what is available these days for the 1108? Proper, real performance mods, not just noisy backboxes and flashy induction kits etc.

the more power the better but not looking to spend stupid money, and not looking to turbo it either. More hassle than its worth :)

??? hardly!

but anyway not really much you can do with it without spending £xxxx and time

Give it a PROPER service, check for anything thats binding, be sure tyres are pumped up

then if you still want more

chip it. fit a 75 cam, bigger throttle body, 4-2-1 manifold, better induction
but while you are doing that you may as well throw a 1.2 block into there.

Depends which engine, MPI or SPI? If SPI, P75 cam, 40mm tb, Uno 45 inlet mani (port match the inlet mani to the exhaust) MkCritch chip, aftermarket exhaust manifold. The Janspeed exhaust is nice and not overly loud. GSR induction kit (or Focus one -- GSR is better, Focus not too bad).

If MPI much the same, but try a 1242 16v throttle body, remap, etc.

Generally the MPI cars are more expensive to do.

Oldschool (GSR) of this parish recons he can get an entirely street useable 100bhp from the 1108.

All good (if mixed) advice - the best way to get more without modifications though is simply to make sure it all works correctly.

A regular engine is going to struggle to make the documented power and torque figures even if it is well maintained simply because of wear and tear.
A proper service and tune-up will do wonders to start with but if that isn't enough you need to look at the advice given above. A 1.2 engine is the simplest and possibly cheapest option but you'll need to replace a few other bits as well - like the exhaust manifold.

As an alternative just get the bottom end looked at properly - just had this redone on my sons car and the results are amazing. All it was supposed to be was new shells and rings but the engineer decided to fiddle and did a bit of rebalancing on it as well. The result is nearly 2 seconds off the 0-60 time and I am stumped on how as there is no way it should work that well without other changes - either the engineer is pulling my leg and not telling the whole truth or the engine as standard has a fair bit of locked-away potential that just needs a careful hand and eye to extract. Just keep in mind that this is not necessarily the cheapest option - I paid for a complete replacement engine with the head rebuilt as well and could have bought a replacement car for the same money but on the upside I know everything on the car works (or doesn't in the case of the gearbox but that is another story altogether).

Buy your old UAD Cinq back Chris - SPi FIRE tuning hasn't moved on very much since you had that.

As fingers said I always found that the bigger TB was the best mod for the money, and TBH the 36mm PSA one to be the most suited to the engine, then throw in a Mckritch or similar and you'd have a much more drivable car
