hi iv got a 1.2 punto sporting(2000) and im wanting to start upgrading the sound system a bit .... but im not goin mad i dont have much money im gonna do this over time so if you could tell me which things i should be thinking about doing first it would help me alot!

iv got this alpine CDA-9831R headunit which iv had for a while now but the standard speakers just dont go loud enough for me! :D

i have a few questions

first...front speakers in the doors

what size are they? and more importanly what size replacement ones can i fit into the space without doin anything major to squeeze them in? and if i put new ones in can i just keep the wires that are already there and swap them straight over?

2ndly...the back of the car

the speakers that are in are in a funny little spot up in the corner either side of the parcel shelf ... can these be taken out? ...if so would i be able to get anything worthwhile that i can just put into that spot? am i better off going for something like 6x9s in the parcel shelf?

how about a sub in the boot? im not looking to deafen padestrians as i drive by but iv got a couple of friends with even little 8" (i think) subs and they seems to make a huge amount of sound... which is pretty cool.

im not really looking to get all this stuff at once so if you guys could outline what would be the best order to upgrade things... in baring in mind what will improve things the most and that im a bit of an amateur so a full wiring kit for a sub would prolly be a bit out of my league to start off with :D

thanks for your help!

Well you've started off in the right order, first would probably be the headunit which you've already got, then think about adding some upgraded speakers and then a sub. Adding a Sub before uprating your speakers will probably just wash out your speakers altogether if they're not that loud. Of course this is very basic and you may have other ideas about what you want to do :) I'm sure someone else will be able to help you with the Punto side of things as I'm no expert on them :) also, the Sub and Amp are not that hard to wire. Check out the guides section for other information on Audio Installation.

Good luck with your install and keep us posted :)

the front speakers are 17cm woofers with a tweeter in the mirror adjuster plates (iirc)

If you get a sub, run that and the front speakers, and disconnect the rears. tbh the general concensus is that 6x9s should remain in shops, as far away from the car as possible

There are many subs out there, and they don't have to cost that much either - I have a Fli Trap Active 12" sub - you can get them for less than £100 if you shop around, and FLI are regarded as one of the best budget audio brands available.

oh yeah, forgot to mention:

Check the mounting depth of the front speakers - there is not much room in the standard pods so if you want (reasonably) powerful speakers then you'll have to make up some spacers so the face of the speaker sits out (allowing the magnet to fit in the pod properly)

for the front speakers I would suggest some Component speakers, rather than co-axials, as the sound will be better, and with most sets you also get a rather snazzy looking crossover

ok thanks for the tips so far!

i think im going to go for some 6.5" componant front speakers first ... is it worth my while keeping to alpine so the stuff is all the same make as my headunit? and if anyone has any good specific ones they have used before and worked for them please suggest away! (y)

It all depends on budget. if you have a top budget then go ahead and get Alpine speakers etc, but that will be expensive.

I have a JVC headunit, JBL speakers upfront (they're actually co-axials at the moment, until payday;) ) but they have Mutant tweeters and crossovers connected up, and 2 Fli Trap subs - and it all works together.

i got about £100 to spend at the moment so i guess i should just get the speakers and wire them straight into the headunit for now untill i get more money and can afford an amp aswell?

suggest away! (y)

Sounds like a good plan :)

Like Paul said, you can get some real bargains second hand - my amps are second hand buys for example :D
