Hi guys, and girls. Just introducing myself here and saying Hi.

Got my first Fiat back in March, it was kind of a "barn find", it's been stood almost a decade in the same spot. I saved it from the scrap yard.

When I bought it, it was all green with mildew and mange from years of being stood. But, a quick pressure wash, a battery, inflated tyres and some fresh fuel, and it started right up. It was a bit groggy for the first minute or so, but then it was sweet as a nut. I quickly got it back home on the driveway, where it has been stood ever since.

It is a 2002 Racing Yellow Punto MK2 1.2 16v Sporting Speedgear, which I'm told are quite rare???. It has a funky Auto transmission with optional sequential semi-auto, which I really like. The body, interior, and alloys are all next to mint condition, it really is, there is barely a mark anywhere except for the front near side wing, which has had some sort of repair at some point and not been done properly as it's starting to go rusty and the paint has badly faded around it, but that'll be tended to in due course.

I have been steadily recommissioning it ever since I bought it to serve as my second car/wifes' first/learner car.
It has had all new tyres, new brakes, timing belt kit with tensioner, both auxiliary belts, water pump, thermostat, new spark plugs, complete new exhaust system including manifold/catalytic converter and mounting rubbers, and fully cleaned and undersealed with Hammerite under body seal, and of course all new oil, filters, coolant ect... Also, the headlights were removed and professionally refinished and buffed to a crystal clear high shine because they had gone very dull and cloudy. Oh, and a new heater blower final stage resistor.

It's had a lot of my time and £££'s spent on it, but I reckon it'll be worth it when it's done. It is almost finished now, and just about ready to go for it's first M.O.T test in a decade.

One other good thing about a recommissioning a good car that has been stood for years, is that it was a relatively new car when it was laid up, just around 3-5 year old, so it has hardly done any miles, just 68k and change, and that shows in the condition of the alloys and the bodywork.

The flip side of that though, is that even though it's been stood, the rust bug has STILL had a go at it, and there are a couple of "tender" areas underneath that have required some work. But it's just because it's been stood is all. All of the typical Punto rot spots are all still solid. But all the underneath work has all been done now, and nothing is getting through all that underseal!

I will post up some pictures soon, when it's been for it's M.O.T, if anyone is interested.

Anyway, I'll be back when it's been for it's test and I can use it. I plan on alternating it's use with the love of my life (my Saab 9-5 2.3 HOT Aero 250) and my Motorcycle. Also, taking the wife out in it to teach her how to drive so she can get her driving test passed, and then it'll become her first car.

Thinking about it, I'm considering changing the CVT fluid and filter too, just to make a proper job of it all.

However, the CVT filter is seemingly hellish expensive, and for no obvious reason. Also, I can't seem to find any Fiat compatible CVT fluid, unless I go into a Motor Factors, and remortgage my house in order to pay for a liter bottle.

Does anyone recommend any specific auto gearbox filters and oil??

Also, forgot to mention earlier in the first post, when I was taking it all to pieces to do all the work I've done, I noticed when I removed the inlet manifold, that one of the breathers had been broken
It's the small (2-3mm approx) one at the front-right of the manifold, under the main air intake pipe.
It is sheared off completely. Does anyone know exactly what it is for if it isn't just a simple breather?

Thanks.

Mike.

Hi Mike,
use SEARCH to get all the info from previous posts..
homeward did a fair bit to his 16V auto,
Charlie
Thanks for the info, I sent a PM to him. Hopefully he sees it and takes pity on me.

My Punto has just thrown me another problem yesterday, (ironically upon completion of it's recommissioning too), the power steering was working perfectly, including City mode, but now the power assist has stopped working in both modes, and I have a Red Steering warning light on the dash.

Does anybody have any ideas??

It was all working fine until I had to turn the steering lock-lock without the engine running, didn't even have a battery on at the time, but it was after this that the Power Steering stopped working

Hi Mike, :)
the steering;
worth getting software connected to the steerings ECU , and resetting things,

unfortunately ,
homeward wasn't a well chap ,
and I have not seen or heard from him in 18 months,
the old threads about his mk2 were VERY informative though, and a testament to his time with us. , :worship:

So I've just had a multimeter on the Punto to see what it's charging voltage is, because numerous sources have told me that it has to be around 14.4v otherwise the power steering is one of the first things to go, and mine is charging at around 13.97v.

Which, okay, it is below what I've been told, but could less than half a volt really cause my power steering to fail?? .... I've gotta get this sorted otherwise it can't go for it's MOT.

14V is good charging voltage, alternator is fine

its either pas motor relays, pas ecu or sensor inside steering column
Okay cheers mate, I'll have that checked. This car is being a nightmare. It has literally been fighting me every step of the way, throwing up new problems every time I just get everything done!:bang:

Thank you for that information. I knew there must be some alternatives. As an aside, the Punto is being picked up by the garage on Thursday (03/11) and is going for it's MOT and to have that steering fault looked at.
Will be back thereafter to say how it got on. So fingers crossed.

Mike.

It passed the MOT  ..... Really was expecting it to fail, but no, it sailed through, not even any advisories:D ..... All my hard work at recommissioning and fault fixing has paid off! And another lovely old Punto will be back on the road soon too:D

The guy from the garage came and took it yesterday morning, and brought it back this morning. He said it drives perfectly fine, gearbox changes up/down all perfect, the new brakes are now run in and fine, they plugged their computer thing into it and reset the steering ecu, which is all it needed, so it is also now fine too.

So now, hopefully early next week, the insurance and tax will be sorted out, and we can start using it, give it a good and thorough clean, and then I can snap some pics of it for you guys(y)

Mike.
