Hi guys, i've got a 1.9 mjet sporting diesel. Both my average consumptions (A and B) never display above 36MPG...ever. Which obviously isnt good. Any suggestions to improve fuel economy? The other half of this question is..does anyone know the difference between the AcA screen and the AcB screen? As they both show different readings. Thanks :)

I reset AcA every time I fill up the car, just so I can gauge my economy. I never touch AcB as I use it more for a long distance average (between services for example).

Give it a good service? Oil, oil filter, fuel filter. Clean the egr. See if that improves.

Also what is the distance between the two destinations? Anything around a few miles and you probably wont see more than 36ish with a diesel when its cold.

ive switched that acb one off. tbh there both a waste of time, just watch the trip meter, its the only proper way of working out correct mpg....mileage done on a tank..

so...its a 45 litre tank..but im sure most dont run to complete empty...

so call it 40 litres(£55 of diesel at current prices!!)....8.79 gallons..

if you do 400miles on a tank = 45.5mpg (400/8.79)

my personal best is 520miles...59mpg average

so when you see people qouting they get 60mpg+ on a long trip is a waste of time, cos its not average of the tank...what matters is how many miles you get out of each tank.

simples :)

Ditto what has been said above.

If you are concerned you are using more fuel than you should then the first thing to do is look at your driving technique. Best way to help you improve your driving technique to use less fuel is to have the Instant Consumption up all the time so you can see what you are using and therefore you can make adjustments as you drive.

If you are driving sedately and your Instant Consumption is high then you may have a problem.

I've found the more economical I try to drive the worst it was. Only had my 1.9 a week and at fistt was sticking it in 6th at every possible moment. I've since learned that if I just drive it it does much better. 30 in 5th is better than in 6th. I do the same as iancookie though and reset trip a but leave b alone as that shows the life of the car were as a shows my last trip.

I do the same though

Ditto again.

Driving in an suitable gear for the speed you are doing will make you put your foot down more to compensate. As you have said...being in the right gear for the right speed is crucial.!

Thanks guys. The EGRs been cleaned, new fuel filter too. (these were a month ago). I use 6th gear literally doing 35mph and above, i assumed the less revs the better.

nope not good to drive like that, puts a hell of a lot of stress on clutch and gearbox too. youll finf driving around, its best to keep engine sat at 2000rpm, i get crazy good mpg doing this

Yesterday I finnaly got my km/l at and acceptable 800km/44 liters.
That's an 18km/l average. No dash average but trip distance.
So around 42mpg.

I ussualy run 80km/h in 6th gear at 1600 rpm.
But as I'm reading now and a mechanic said it better to do that in 5th gear.

He was talking about y maps of the engine.
There were the gap is the smallest the best fuel economy it is.

Does anyone have this sheet he's talking about?

Maybe it good to post the rpm / speed / gear and average mpg to work out the best way to get a nice fuel consumption rate.

What? Who taught you to figure fuel consumption? What if I drive 50 miles and then decide to refuel? Does that make my "mileage" 5.7mpg if I assume I've burned 8.79 UK sized gallons? I hardly think so.

How far you drive before you refuel doesn't mean anything. In your example, if you had actually burned down to a half a liter remaining, you mileage would have been around 53mpg, not 59.

What matters is how far you drive (starting with a full tank) divided by how much fuel you pump in when you next fill the tank if you're figuring mpg. Where I live the math is a bit more involved since we talk about litri per cento chilometri (L/100km), but the idea is the same; i.e. how far did you go and how much did you put in to refill the tank.

your questioning me, yet youve misinterpreted my calculations, where did i say that to work out your mpg you have to use 8.79 uk gallons?

my calculations are based on the fact that i always fill my car from near empty, and that is 40 litres which is 8.79 gallons, if i only half fill it, that would be 20 litres, 4.39 gallons so why you jumping down my neck, when your completely in the wrong??

so if you want to be awkward and only want to drive 50 miles before you topup, thats up to you. theres nothing wrong whatsoever with how i work out my consumption. im sure anyone with half a brain can work out that to work out consumption based on different criteria, you would change calculations accordingly.

so unless youve got something constructive to say, move along. we dont use kms here in uk, so your point is of no use to us!

"if i had burned down to half a litre' what does that even mean, ?? people like you make my blood boil, you fail to read what ive explained proeprly then try to pick fault.

why on earth would i think that if you drive 50 miles and then fill up my mpg is 5.7???

i would drive 50 miles, top up, and note how many litres i put in to make it full again, so in mine that would probably be 4.5litres which equates to 50mpg

Like above I tend to aim at keeping my engine revs around the 2000 mark....which does produce some very good consumption figures on longer runs....

only on trip so I agree it could be out, I dont have money for full tanks haha but saying that when I picked up my t-jet and drove 4 hours home the trip claimed 60.2mpg!? bare in mind this was following my grandad...haha 42 is a shock though its normally low 30s high 20s
