Hi all in my endeavours to sort out my 09 Fiat 500 Diesel, I bought an Autel MS300 Scan Tool / Diagnostic to read and clear fault codes. It cycles through the different OBD2 protocols and then comes up with "Link Error". Does anyone know if Fiat have a specific protocol (as VW do) that requires a specific reader? The reader works perfectly on my other cars (Ford Mini Mazda) cheers

OBD legislation missed the mark by only covering power unit. Most manufacturers have therefore created their own protocols for the rest of the vehicle, as an attempt to retain the vehicle in the dealer network. Fiat are at the forefront of 'different' protocols.

There is a great bit of software, MultiECUscan http://www.multiecuscan.net/ that mimics most functionality of the Fiat dealer system. I don't know how Us spec cars may differ, so might be worth asking from the MES website.

You also need a OBD connector and cable, read the MES site to understand that you must get one stated as suitable for Fiat, or it will refuse to communicate. Then you need a set of adaptor cables. Search MultiECUscan on here for more threads with details.

Once equipped with the software, a PC, the cables, you still have to make it connect. This can sometimes be troublesome. See this thread fro a specific procedure that has worked for me reliably. Post #5 . https://www.fiatforum.com/panda/352156-fiatecuscan.html
