I carried out a 40k km service on the ta last weekend. It went very well except one bolt snapped off that holds the plastic engine guard on, a few zip ties for now and I'll easy-out it another day. I would however like to reset the service indicator on the cluster, I've tried searching the webs and this site and from what I can understand is a service tool is required. So I was hoping that one of you lovely people would know more, any help would be great. Cheers..

Yes you need multiecuscan software to reset it otherwise it's trip to a fiat garage

Does it have to be reset or can I carry on?

On all but the diesel engined models you can just carry on; it may disappear on its own accord after a thousand miles or so.

Diesel engined models are different; they have both a service indicator and an oil degradation counter; the oil should be changed when the degradation counter is triggered, and the service indicator tells you when the rest of the service items are due.

The oil degradation counter must be reset when the oil is changed, or DPF regeneration may be compromised, leading to serious long term damage.

The licenced version of multiecuscan can reset both counters.

Think service menu just shows how many miles to go from 12 or 18,000. Depends when it was last reset. Just a reminder.

Thanks, I'll pick up a multiecuscan kit its only 115 pounds so not that bad. Just have to get myself a laptop, my mac book is 5yo now and it's been playing up so I can probably justify buying one.

I bought a cheap PC laptop so I could use MES, as we're all Mac in this household!

I only paid £50 for the PC, but it works well enough with MES, though I wouldn't even consider using it for anything else. PC's are horrible things. ;)

Good luck,
Mick.

You can get kit for less,
You need a PC (laptop or notepad) Windows XP or newer OS, not Apple, a registered copy of Multiecuscan (€50) www.multiecuscan.net, an ELM 327 or similar interface lead and a No.3 "Yellow" adaptor lead..e.g. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271275445368 (£25) or http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281712496622? I've used these sellers
You can also use AlfaOBD.
Most garages won't reset the service indicator unless they did the service for legal reasons. If you are near Cambridge I can do it for you.

Just out of interest why do you need the yellow lead as it looks like the adapter would plug in the original socket, may have to invest in this later if we're keeping the Fiat a long time?

Hi,
Service reset is not part of the engine ECU on the 500. The yellow adaptor swaps the connections to the body computer so you can access it.

Just started using my mutiecuscan and first job was to reset the service interval timer on my 3year old diesel This morning I noticed all the radio buttons have tuned themselves in to one station ...what's that all about :)

Don't know why the radio reset, did you try a proxi alignment?
On the service reset, did you also reset the oil degradtion counter? It's a seperate function on most Fiat Diesels with a DPF. It's under the "Adjustments" tab in MES. If you don't reset it the ECU will stop regenerating the DPF.

I reset oil degradation counter which I called the service counter
I don't know what aproxi alignment means yet
