Why the hell could it not get away from me?!

It happened yesterday when I saw him driving round like a nob, so I followed it. Was the soft-top Roadster. Roads were pretty much empty. Off the lights it went straight ahead, easily 2 car lengths. I wasn't really trying though, I never get good starts. From 30 in 2nd to about 75 in 3rd the gap wasn't increasing at all. We both slowed down as a roundabout came (those cars handle so good). Then on the exit I was right behind him. Was about 20-25mph in 2nd. We both put our foot down. Got upto 80 in 3rd, and I couldn't gain on him and he couldn't leave me. There was a 'blip' in the gap as I changed up into 3rd, but that's it. We both then slowed as there was cars and drove normally till the end of the road. Then the 2nd roundabout. The exit of this one was a uphill dual carriageway. He went slow in the first lane. I went in the second lane along side it (although half a car length ahead), and looked at him. We were both level at this point. Then he floored it and so did I. It must've been just under 30mph (me, 2nd gear). Again, all the way upto 80 it was neck-and-neck. Then there was traffic light so I turned off right to go home and didn't wait around to see the look on the guys face.

I can understand it depends on the driver, but this guy had three (at least two proper) chances to get it right.

I have the 1.8 16v engine in my Marea with max torque of 154 Nm and 115bhp (assuming standard engine).

A 180bhp Audi TT has standard max torque of 234.6 Nm (did a search on the net). Basically it's a car with more bhp, more torque and slightly lighter than my Marea.

So wtf?

me too. And ouch, your poor engine, 80 in 3rd with a large engine isn't good :O

He probably didn't want to go at it as properly as you.

what's wrong with 80 in 3rd, I cannot do less than 90 in 4th;)

redline at 6.5k, 70mph at 3.2k, 160 on the clock:p:p

Doesn't matter to hugely where red line is though does it? You should look after your engine and it will look after you.

3.2k in 3rd at 70 though? If that is true that is pretty low...correct? Sounds like diesel revs! What revs are you getting in 3rd at 80?

Ok, I agree, if it isn't much above 4k at 80 in 3rd that is ok but if it is, which I expect it is (?) that is putting a tremendous load on an engine quite unneccesarily. Ok if you do it once in a life time but not frequently. Large engines are supposed to be rev'ed quite lowly compared to smaller engines correct?

Depends on the engine.

I don't usually drive like that at all. Heck, I hardly ever have "races", so yes I do look after my engine :)

Dunno what revs I was at exactly, didn't look :D but it probably was above 4k.

Yeah OK I agree:(
3.2k at 70 is correct, in 5th. Don't think i've done 80 in 3rd though, a bit cheeky there:I
I don't recommend ragging the engine, but it can be fun at times[}:)]

Sorry being very immature, guess i'm going through my 3rd childhood.

LOL, being 18 I should be the one going up to 7,000 revs etc. lol. I suddenly thought I was stupid when you were saying 3.2k at 70 in 3rd! I wil let you off for your little cheeky bit.

LOL, not saying anyone is wrong or you don't look after your cars, just suggesting 80 in 3rd is high!

Revving your car occassionally ain't gonna nack it, look at engines with variable valve timing, they are designed for that;)

I can't see why a larger engine can't be rev'd like a smaller one?

James, i'll let you know when my VVT starts working correctly;)

Bigger engines tend to be more complex and so have more parts to fall to bits. Components also tend to be heavier, hence more kinetic energy and stress. Bigger engines are also less likely to be fail safe and so when they do go the resultant damage is greater.

However, you should be able to redline them just as often as a standard motor within reason[}:)]

James M, it's just something I have learnt from my experience. To get anything out of small petrol engines - 1 litres etc. - you need to have high rev's but larger engines have all the power much lower down. As polecat says, heavier parts etc.

Maybe I will look on the internet later as to why but anyone on here who regularly drives a large car and a small car on here might be able to agree with me?

Paul

Yeah, surely it depends upon the engines power curve? (which obviously depends on the Torque curve), but yeah, bigger engines have more torque, so need less reving to go, put it won't nack them, not unless you keep them loaded at high revs

Firstly, we aren't talking about a VVT engine are we...they can go to high revs because a second system takes over to sort out the timing.

This should explain why large engines use lower revs.

And it could potentially damage it due to the massive increase in forces and energy, energy (kinetic) is proportional to velocity square so it can make a massive different. Secondly, thouse little valves etc. are having to go at twice the speed of a normally driven car...that can't be good for it can it.

After some research on the net, it seems the TT in question may have been a 150bhp version. I never knew they had one, but it seems they do a 1.8T 150bhp front-wheel drive one only available in a soft-top. Also means more people can buy one (cheaper to buy and on insurance) to say "I drive a TT" etc.

Now they have a 0-60 of 9secs (searched for all this info). This is a second faster than my Marea (standard rated) which accounts for a change into 3rd to actually hit 60. IOW, quite similar. Therefore, possibly, the in gear acceleration (2nd, 3rd) might actually be similar?

Either way, I now need to find a Golf/Audi/Seat/Skoda with those 1.8T engines in and confirm ;)

LOL! Off road I assume...!

Audi messed up IMO with the TT. They have aimed it at a funny market, 20 somethings with a high disposible income. It means a massive number of people in that range bought one. It is similar to the POrsche 944 mistake, it lowered the brand kudos in some form. An audi is for people who want a nice car but not an overstated BMW or Mercedes. I think it is a pity because a TT isn't a typical audi IMO.

You may ask, why is this a problem; car marques can go into different areas. Well, yes, but the Audi Coupe (is that it's name, the larger cabriolet) fitted into this market already. If they had made the TT into a powerful car with more sporty characteristics OR typical Audi luxuries instead of a fairly bland, everyone can own fairly dull cabriolet it would have been better.

I hate the idea of saying "I own a TT cabriolet" yet not being able to out run a Fiat despite having a nice audi badge and spending a lot more on it than you on your car.

It isn't Audi and it isn't German to do that...!
