Arc, that's why I am talking about robotic helicopters, the technology is here, it could be flown 100miles away with a simple high speed data link to a simulator.

Yeah I am not sure what that's all about.

Arc, the dust is nothing compared to what could happen...

Ok, whilst we're at it, let's create a helicopter with minimal downdraft lol

sorted :D

reading into it, they had no choice to keep running the plant. I would've thought they'd be a little more careful tho, there was a fire in 1991 which led to the closure of another reactor.

just found this site too

although according to that site.. the reactor blew in 1996.. hmmm, pinches of salt all round.. i mean if they cant get that right..

It all sounds rather scary :(. It's a subject I find interesting to read about because it shows the way not to handle nuclear fuels and what can happen when it all goes wrong. It's awful that so many have died and continue to die because of the way it was (mis)managed and (under)funded. I remember not long after it happened they said the shell had a lifespan of 20-25 years and well now it's errrr 20-25 years and it's still there.

Helz, I agree, however, its all a question of 'which way should we wipe out life' either we risk neuclear energy, and manage it as best we can. or we continue burning carbon, either way its not an easy descision to make, but one we kind of have to make right now.

I spent some time reading that site last night, it was fascinating, especially after haveing seen the 'war on terra' documentry on Chanel 4 some weeks ago.

Yes Alex, I was wondering when someone was going to come out with that one. To be honest I'm a supporter of nuclear fuels over fossil fuels, namely because it isn't going to run out in such a hurry, although I understand the problems are worse if something does go wrong. I just have to trust that governments in the developed world will allow nuclear stations to be built and build so many safeguards into them that there is a very slight chance of things going wrong. The UK is not an underdeveloped communist country (yet) where people are scared of speaking out over concerns such as these (well the government just kill you off if you do but that's another argument) so hopefully we would be able to sort something out. I am in no way whatsoever in favour of buying electricity from France, that's a stupid idea and whoever thought that one up has forgotten the events of 60 years ago.

such a difficult issue, even if the whole of the developed world could cut straight over to using nuclear at the press of a button, the developing world is still burning dirty fuels (i.e. not as refined as those in the western world) like there is no tomorrow (hmmm that could well be the case). I'm not sure its even going to be possible to prevent the carbon emissions reaching 433p/bn which I believe is roughly the magical number at which the world starts to stew.

It's not as simple as all that. Recent research into not only "global warming" but also "global dimming" has concluded that infact pollution is in some way protecting us from the full effects of the suns rays, so we could in fact increase the speed of global warming issues if we completely stop using fuels that deposit carbon into the atmosphere. :(

Don't believe me read here, it's a bit scary when you see the time scales this could all happen!

The difficulty is that nobody actually knows whats going to happen, whats going to cause it, and what the actual result will be, but I'm not sure that a watch and wait approach is good enough, but there are so many different people researching different aspects of the problem that a clear picture is not available. All we can do is speculate, and who knows what will accumulate.
