Are mk1 hgts suppose to have limiters on the rpm?

PaulR, I said the 'redline' is there for driver indication, its not a 'don't go beyond this as your engine will explode' indicator. Thats what the ECU does.

If its not rev limiting then its fine.

Tom read the Manual. Its red for a reason. Hence why they put them on all rev counters.

I expected more from you. Even the manual tells you its not acceptable.

oppps wil have to ease up in 1st and 2nd gear lol... just get the urge at the lights tho, when some smarty arse starts looking funny at a 18 yr old driving a hgt hehe. only do it now when engine is warm. engine is fine **touches wood** tho an at 65k just now on a p plate is low anyway so happy days..

You're learning as I did paul.
HGT's don't like to be driven.
They drive you :)

If the redline was the absolute 'don't go above this' limit then why is the hard limit set almost 1000RPM higher? Eh? Eh? ;)

Yes the manual says you shouldn't go above 'redline' and really there is little point going above it as you loose power VERY quickly after peak power but if it was actually dangerous to the engine then the hard rev limiter would be set lower.

Whats so bad/dangerous with driving hard when its cold? Wont it just warm her up?

The oil is still quite thick so doesn't flow as well and all the metal parts are still cold and not the right size.

Oh rite, but would it be ok to do as I do and cruise at 40 in 3rd in the morns to try and get the heating working faster(bloody 7am starts). Or will it not actually make any difference? Cheers

and shape :)

ok...so basically its cool...good, i will have to see when the limiter does cut in just so i know! because if thelimiter is faulty or doesnt work then i will be killing the engine! cheers all...

@Nico...i know what you mean with that one...it is taking me longer to discover the full hit of the hgt! but the smile does grow!

Its unlikely the limiter is faulty. That would mean the ECU is ****ed and it probably wouldn't run correctly at all.

Heh.

I once had my 1.2 upto 8,000rpm.

Changed down from 5th to 2nd, which was meant to be 4th.

was doing 70 at the time.

Car still ran fine after.

also mate try telling use a few speeds to rpm so we can tell u if ur rev counter is in the right location. as u can get a signal but it will be wrong i.e say ur doing 5k but actually ur doing 4

if u get me

Smee

well in 4th i did 110mph on the red line (i believe its 6.5k) but on another occation it pulled STRONG into the read in 4th through to 120mph...this was obviously done on private land!

Paul R

nothing tom but he he sayd yes im doing 7k in 4th and doing 70 i think we can assume somethings wrong

Smee

Personally ive never gone that fast in a HGT, well not when im driving, but i have had an 'indicated' 112mph in 4th out of my 1.8 HLX. Not for a second saying i was actually going that fast, but i was only doing about 6.7K. So 120 sounds more like it, but you say it was well into the red?

Ben.

not well into the red about 500rpm more!

I dont think this is going to work, as speedos are all differnt, most wheel sizes are differnt and speedo are normally wrong anyway + i would need to directly compare with someone with a hgt at least!
