sk this because i am sure on my hlx bravos i couldnt go in the red it would just stop going and i am sure this was a limiter?

Well my hgt, goes into the red, i didnt try it exactly, just wasnt used to it and put my foot down, was concentrating on getting out in the gap...looked down and i was in the red, obviously changed straight away but is this right or is something no quite right here?

Also what do people get out of each gear???mph?

Cheers all

Would i be damaging the car in the red? surely fiat would put the limiter where it would stop damage to the car???

Obviously i am talking as if the engine is hot! not cold....

Paul R

No the rev limiter kicks in after about 3 or 4 seconds sitting in the red, then it cuts off the injectors to slow down the revs.

I know this as i've red lined afew times in my old bravo.

Joske

The limiter is there for a reason mate, and you've answered your own question.

Just make sure it's warmed up properly before you go and rev the ******** off it.

Now you've had 2 HLX's and a HGT- do you think that the HGT is much faster? or a lot? :)

@joske...that didnt happen to me so i guess what i did was cool then?

@ian..well i am unsure on that one at the mo, the HGT is definatly quicker, but i put 18@s on my hgt asnd now its taken that edge of the power, i still love it but it seems to bog down when i change gear, as if there is a flat spot there, its strange....to be honest the hgts speed is really noticable untill 90 etc when the hlx runs out of steam... and the engine is mush smoother then the hlx's so it doesnt feel as fast as it really is...its just feels like a totally different car...BUT IT SOUNDS THE TITS!lol...

Sounds like the ECU is faulty then if the limiter doesn't protect the car.

J

what do you mean if the ecu doesnt protect the car??? i only went in the red i was bouncing at 9k or anything??? i went in the red, notice then changed up!

Paul R

Yeah it will have a limiter, but as said above it cuts the injectors, so it doesn't bounce on the limiter like some other cars i have driven.

Again as above, just make sure its warmed up before hand and the higher the gear the better (eg not 1st ;))

My MK1 HGT will red line in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, I've never got ther to the redline in 4th or 5th. I tried my hardest one time to get he near the redline in 5th but she just wouldn't get there :(

so techiniqually they is no problem with going in the red? as the ecu will protect it? obviously i am talking as if the engine is hot, and not cold! as we all know about driving it hard when cold!

power

Don't you loose all to most of your power once going past say 700orpm

don't quote me on this but the power band does die after a certain rpm and so you might as well change up a gear. Unless you want to stay in that gear for a corner for example

But i aint no "racer"

Re: power

i am a poser through and through and aint no racer! but i just want to know, so i dont need to worry about going in the red...

I will change before the red line anyways...its just a question out of curiousity anyways...

You are right about the power band by the way!

Re: power

The red line is a warning limit, you can go into the red every now and then and the car will be fine.
Thrash her everywhere and the engine will wear prematurely.
The rev limiter doesn't kick in as soon as you enter the red line, it'll be near the end of the red zone.

She'll be fine with the occasional thrash Paul :)

How many miles has she done? My MK1 has 108,000 now.

The 'red line' is usually set 500 or so RPM after peak power to indicate to the driver when they should change. The red line on the tacho has nowt to do with the rev limiter which is usually set somewhat higher (over 7k on the 1.6) and stops fun things going on with the engine.

ok smarty! but is going into the red a problem? on the tacho?

Also do you know where peak power is on the HGT?

Paul R

I can't find the info on the MK1, but the MK2 peak at 6500 rpm, so any higher than 6500 is a bit of a waste.

changing on peak power is wrong you need to go beyond, as just off peak power is still greater than the lower rev power in the next gear. ideally you want a dyno in each gear and overlap the power curves according to speed, the point at which they intersect is change up time.
500 rpm beyond peak is still more power than 1500 rpm before peak.
