Technical Anyone had any success with an ELM323/327 interface

A bit more proof that buying an ELM interface is a total waste on a JTD (at least most of them :()

My ELM interface & Software reported NO Errors on my JTD (check further back if you want more info on this).

However, I've just had Examiner connected and it reported 4 Errors:

P0380 - Preheater - now fixed
P0110 - MAF disconnected/reconnected
P0101 - MAF disconnected/reconnected
P0404 - EGR disconnected/reconnected

I paid for one hour (£35+VAT) so took the car for a run with Examiner connected. Had it checking reported Air Mass vs. Predicted Air Mass and also EGR operation. All reports came back 100% so looks like my search for reasons for poor fuel economy have hit a brick wall :bang:

steely tried his handheld diagnostic too last night at the italian night and it gust said n/a for everithing and no faults. that was even with the map disconnected than the em light still on! :(

if we could just find out what protocol the ecu uses????

hi...im from Romania...i have a 5 door Stilo JTD from 2002...same problmes with elm327...but i found this on internet "Interfata Fiat mOByDic 3220 USB"...and the price 849 ron = 230 euro...does anyone know something about this product?

this is the link for the product ozenelektronik.com/downs/oe90c2620.pdf

hey people, i thought i would post this here as it kind of keeps all the info central.

i am trying to use elm323 and digimoto and with atz it detects the elm323

i do atfi and it says error. i do atsi and it says ok but then i get the 215 temp and no data.

feel free anyone to try and talk me through other ways to connect.

Not seen it myself but gather it should say "BUS INIT: OK"

If you don't get this then I'd guess it hasn't worked (hasn't initialized)

Have you tried "ATSI" which I think should report the same.

My car seems to be the same. I have tried MAF, EGR and checked intercooler pipes. Have you made any progress on this?

A remap is a safe bet for improved mpg (and one hell of a lot of fun on top when you decide to use it )

Since remap I've managed 56.5mpg over 130 miles which is an improvement over what its been of recent but it's still lacking something (previous best in standard form was 62.5mpg over the same route).

Like you I'm convinced there's a reason for it but just can't put my finger on it :bang:

Have you considered cleaning the inlet manifold as someone reported an improvement in mpg after doing this. I know for a fact mine is very dirty after stripping the EGR :chin:

You think you have a problem???? I dont. Your MPG sounds perfectly normal.
I average about 41mpg driving gently. The best I ever got was 47 on the motorway with cruise control on. One thing I do notice is that if I floor it, I get a lot of black smoke. Enough so I can see it in the mirror. I may try blocking off the EGR valve next, but I suspect I may also have worn injectors.

I've noticed a lot of town driving is a killer - mine is down to 42mpg at the moment. Not sure at what speed you're getting 47mpg but I can manage slightly over 50mpg at constant 80mph.

Do you get exactly the same with MAF disconnected?

am getting the about the same here with 42 on the average but that was mainly from short runs and a heavy foot , was starting to think something was not as it should be so reset the B trip and took a drive along the A roads they don't do dual roads up this way but the B trip got up to 49mpg doing approx 55 mph and hills have yet to get a good long run but feel happier now that the mpg was rising all the time and think it would of gone higher had I been cruising on a dual road...like Argo says town driving ,short runs and heavy right foot make a noticable difference to mpg figures, the B reset and a test drive seems the way to check things out.

any ideas how we would go about replicating this?

Im just reading into it now, but my car only has a K line, no L line so it sends/recieves data along the same line, unlike the newer cars which use K and L.

The fiat coupe 20v and 20v turbo AFAIK used a similar system, so im knocking up a circuit that worked for the coupe and going to go from there. There was/is a guy that had a thread on the fccuk forum about this, but the older thread with all the technical info has disspeared.

Ive got a Fiat PDF which describes the KWP2000 protocol over K line that im looking over to see if it sheds any light.

OK, have some success with this now

www.gendan.co.uk have just launched a software product called 'ItaliaCheck' which is designed to work with an ELM interface.

It can both read and clear fault codes on my JTD so it should work with any JTD (y)

At the moment that's all it can do, but it's a start, and I think the company is maybe researching further options.

I had a look at the web site but could not find it. How much does it cost / where is it downloaded from?
I am very interested to try it.

so what exactly have you bought argo? software to go with an elm327 interface?

is the only option on the software to read and reset trouble codes? does it have the other options but they dont work or does it not have other options?

It works with both ELM323 & 327 (not tried it on a 327 myself but sure it should work) and as already said it can only show/reset codes. It's too recent for their website so best to email if interested.

It basically puts end to this thread as I now know for certain my JTD is NOT OBDII compliant. It never has been an issue of the laptop you use, using USB or RS232, how fast it is or the ELM interface itself. My JTD and a good many others are simply not OBD compliant and that's the answer.

If anyone gets as far as "ELM interface detected" (or something similar) on the log of the program they're using but no further then the problem is they're not using Fiat based software.

The definitive test would seem to be: (the free program 'DigiMoto Light' is best for doing this)
  • AT SI - if "OK" the system will respond to Fiat based software i.e. it's connected up properly.
  • AT FI - if "OK" then your car IS ALSO OBDII compliant

The search now is to find if any other companies can provide dedicated Fiat based diagnostic software (y)
