Good evening, everyone.

Could someone please help this hapless sod out?

I've been chasing an ABS fault on my 1.9 JTD Dobbie (2009 vintage), and I'm at the end of my rope with it.
What's happening is when I start 'Dobbie', I get the ABS light on and it goes off, but when I take it for a drive, the light comes on and stays on.
I've scanned it with mulitecuscan, and it gives 'incoherent speed' to the driver's side front. very frustrating.

anyway, this is what I've done.

  • I've changed the ABS sensors twice in case the first one was a dud,
  • I rewired the ABS pump to switch speed sensor input channels, and that works fine.
  • So I'm thinking it's the ABS ring. I know it's integrated into the hub.
For the life of me, can I find which hub I need to buy! I've looked at ePER and found the hub part number. When I googled, the only ABS integrated hub assembly is for the rear axle. And there are two wheel bearing versions available (I guess, I think the 'Antiskid' version is the one I need).

I hope this makes sense, and someone is able to help out here.

Thanks again.

I guess you confirmed it's not the tyre (either pressure or unequal wear compared to the others) first?

It does sound like you need to fit a new front hub bearing to suit ABS , this type has a magnetic ring in one end so be fitted the correct way round, incidentally if you touch it with anything magnetic you will destroy the new bearing!!!
It is quite common when people fit an ABS sensor that they clean the hole out with a screwdriver which has become slightly magnetic, thus destroying the bearing when all they needed was a new sensor.:(
If you dig through my old posts on that subject you may find a photo of the test card from SKF bearings that I use to check them. It may take a while.;););)

Thanks for the help, both.

ZaphodB - I never really considered the tyres in honesty, I'll be getting the wheel balancing checked tomorrow, but the pressures are equal.

Bugsymike - I'll have a look over you old posts.

That will keep you busy.;)
I will take pity and show you this photo of the test card.

Bugsymike - Thanks for the help with this, I've just ordered a card via eBay. I'm I right in thinking then the ABS ring is in the bearing itself and not the wheel hub assembly?

Yes generally a new ABS type bearing if that proves to be faulty.
On some makes of vehicle they only suppy bearingas in a hub type assembly, a Skoda I had was like that.
If you just get a bearing and you have that test card, make sure the bearing goes in the right way around so ABS sensor can read it.;)
Also remember what I said about keeping anything magnetic including screwdrivers away from it.

That explains why I can't find a wheel hub with the ABS ring visible. I'm looking for the bearings. with any luck, I'll find them.
If confirmed the part No: with ePAR as 46745258
Cheers again

It will probably just look like a sealed bearing, hopefully it will bve marked , but if your card comes you can test it.
Again no magnets.:)

that's annoying, the bearing is too large.

I've stripped the wheel hub, and now I'm wondering if the ABS sensor is the correct one.
Is there a way of finding the dimensions for an original ABS sensor? I noticed that the sensor protruded out of the wheel hub by maybe 6/7mm.

It looks like this car is getting a bit closer to the crusher!
