my alternator seems to be failing in some way, sometimes the warning light doesn't come on on ignition , which means that it then won't charge, sometimes it's ok

when disconnecting the warning light lead and putting it back on the light comes on briefly then goes out again..

i'm thinking it might be the regulator?

does anyone have a spare alternator or regulator?

or have any ideas on what it might be...

it's the 65A version ( 63320040 )

cheers

pete

earths checking...no not done that, why would it come and go when putting the battery lamp lead in?

but will do...now to work out where they are...

Hi,
loose connection somewhere,
or a fraying cable with only a few strands left is not uncommon with age,

let us know if you need a second alternator / or a regulator,

Charlie

Hi,
loose connection somewhere

could be as it's stopped doing it now...might have just been the warning light lead as it is apparently needed to 'start' up the coils in the alternator, what kind of a stupid design is that where the warning light not working breaks the system...

needing that circuit is only TOO common i'm afraid,

the one thing I recall from 1970's / 80's Marelli is that if you notice a slight "glow" to the battery / charge light at night it probably needs a new charge regualtor,

mine pumped-out a full 1.4.4V all day long , but every now and again would mess around, repalcement regulator sorted that,

I assume you have checked you earth points on both wings, and the one on the engine block...

can anyone tell me where the earth leads are from the engine/battery etc

alternator stopped working today and once again when it's wet

i'm also wondering whether the earth strap ( 1995 model ) is jumped to the gearbox and so when that garage forgot to bolt my gearbox back on it might have been damaged...

ah yes found it tonight, quite hard to see, but looks ok

will buy a new regulator tomorrow and hopefully that'll fix it

can't figure out how rainy days seem to trigger it...
