Technical All nostalgic - Arrival of my 1996 Uno Start

Thank you for the kind words. I got a lot of advice from new friends made on FiatForum

It has been a long process and the journey is far from over but I'm loving the challenge.

Going to start on bumpers and minor imperfections on paintwork next.

Starting to look like a proper show motor! Did you sell your black one with the blue wheels or are you assembling an Uno fleet!

Maybe it was dark blue… with blue painted wheels?

I may be confused. It's happened here and there.

With all this chopping and changing of gearboxes and diffs... what gearing setup do you have now? Do you think that the transmission and bottom end of the car are now all sorted? Or will it be undergeared for a 1.0 45 when the engine is a 60-ish 1.25 MPI?

By the way it looks great with the standard steel wheels and plastic trims. (y)

Compliments are always appreciated especially after all the hard work I've put into her already. As I mentioned earlier this is a journey for me...

Both the Punto 60 and the Uno 45 use the same C514 gearbox. The 45 diff is a bit smaller than the P60 unit but they are interchangeable. First gear feels a bit short but this might be my imagination. I do have a spare P60 diff that I might install after the engine upgrade. Then again I might install a 6 speed gearbox instead.

I do still have half the turbo kit I'm debating about installing. Might save it for another time or another Uno.

You'll be pleased to know the Punto is doing well. I've spent loads of time restoring it mechanically. It has had new clutch kit, timing kit, oil seals, full service etc. I'm halfway through valeting her too. I'm also busy repairing dents and rust then it will be time to detail her etc. But that's a post for the Punto forum which I'll do when she's done.

Perhaps if you end up buying another Uno that's already been modified, you could put it on that?

And that's a relief. Like the mk1s, mk2 Puntos are starting to get to the sort of age where they need to be saved: they're too nice to die! :(

Haha there's still over 16000 Punto's kicking about and another 3300 sorn'd according to howmanyleft.co.uk they'll be around for awhile still.

How many were sold, with 20,000 left? You still see quite a few on the roads... Apart from the one Uno that used to live a couple of streets away from my house I haven't spotted one in ages... Now that's sad. :(

I see loads of Punto's, 2 in my street and 1 or 2 come in at work each week. Uno's though, never seen one ever in Southern England.

Looking at your thread makes me wish i had more time to spend on mine. Looking nice, I've had a few people say they've never seen an uno before and didnt know what my car was

"Never seen an Uno before" Whaaaat? Haha then again in the UK they stopped making them in 1994 (I think) so they are getting rare.

What is this world coming to when people have never seen an Uno before :D

For me, the Uno/Tipo era were great designs and the high point for Fiat style. Everything since then, particularly the new Tipo and New Panda, is a slippery slope towards generic styling... You need to see the badge to know it's a Fiat. That's why people like Core are doing an excellent service!!!! Keep em on the roads... If only to educate the youth of today!!!!

Not necessarily: I find that Fiats stand out from the humdrum nonsense that most people buy. And I'm in my mid 20s, lol! :)
