Hi, I'm going to look at a 2002 model 1.6 active stilo on Saturday and have heard that there are quite a few problems with the 2002 models, can anyone advise what specific problems i should be looking out and any questions I should be asking, i'm new to the whole car buying malarky.

As Stilos respond well to TLC, a full service history (with proof) is vitial. Depending on mileage, check that the cambelt has been changed at the required time. Ask to see the Reg Doc and if possible make contact with the previous owner. Ask him/her what problems they had with the car, whether it was in any serious accidents and why they got rid of it!

Good luck.

I have a 2002 1.6 Active 3 Door on purchase I missed a few things make sure that you get the car up to temp, the needle should sit bang on in the middle if it does not and only goes to the quater mark you will need a new thermostat £150. Check cambelt history, check all electrics work and no warning lights stay on. If the brakes squeel on driving may need new discs and pads £150, whilst hot listen to the exhaust and make sure its not blowing I had to replace the middle and rear £180. Make sure that you get the radio code, key code, and electronic code as they all cost from the Fiat dealer. The helpful people on this forum can get the radio code. Check the rear parking sensors if it has them. Once I sorted everything it is a great car but you will have to maintain it and it will run fine. Check the instrument cluster works hope this helps

thermo was 38 from shop4parts a month ago (this part will fail at about 6-7 years.. not a dif job.. took me 2 hours with coffe and smoke breaks) if it does not heat up at idle use this as a bargain point; if it overheats at idle (same reason – thermo) but damage is likely to have been done already.. move on..pads will squeal if not fitted using copper grease around the spring hinge (or an aftermarket replacement inc the performance parts) check visually the state of pads and discs.. there is a special cut-out in the calliper for you to do that at the front and the view is unobstructed at the back; exhaust normally blows from the flexi this can be replaced.. the part is about 10-20 squid + whatever labour is taken for the welding.. beyond that.. history and t-belt are a must.. use search for further info (believe it or not - you are not the first person to ask this question)

Thanks for all your replies. It is a 5 door stilo and it has 73000 miles on the clock.
