Hey all, have been having a few clutch / gear issues with my MK1 60sx lately, have done some work to the car but need help narrowing down whats going on as I still have a few problems.
To start out, gears were being notchy as hell, reckoned the clutch was going but was trying to leave it as long as possible - car was still drivable and no grinding of the gears.
Got worse, started to grind most of the time going into reverse, if i selected another gear and paused it usually didn't grind, but even this was hit and miss. Was also really difficult to get into first and second - good heard shove was required - sometimes having to go into 2nd then first to be able to get 1st. Also the clutch release bearing had started making noise, so finally got around to changing the clutch.
Got a Luk clutch kit, fitted it. Old bearing was screwed but still just about intact, plate splines were eaten away a fair bit. Clutch fork looked ok (more on this later).
Anyways, still have the grinding into reverse and it's still difficult to get 1st and 2nd (more so 1st). The clutch kit has definitely improved it a little, and the clutch feels good, nice and light, good bite etc.
Have checked that the gearbox oil is full, all good there. Have had a look at the slave cylinder and bled it, all seems good there too. Have also had a look through the clutch inspection hole and the clutch seems to be engaging and disengaging fine.
I'm fast reaching the limits of my knowledge here - I want to try and rule out all clutch related stuff before I start blaming the gearbox.
One thing that I thought was that it could be the clutch fork. It did look fine, and the bearing fit it well, but I've never seen a punto clutch fork (or any other for that matter!) so I don't really know - is it worth taking off the gearbox again to replace this?
My next move is to drain the hydraulics and refill / bleed it all - by the looks of what came out of the slave cylinder when I bled it this may never have been done.
Any other tests or leads much appreciated - was thinking of manually engaging the clutch without the slave cylinder to see if its getting full travel, maybe with the engine on to see if it grinds when i operate the clutch manually, is this daft?
