Bought an Active Eco 1.1 last week (brand new from dealer) and received two keys.

The owner manual says that there should be a code attached to the keys.

I've not got this.

Is the manual wrong?

Not contacted the dealer yet, I presume forum users are more knowledgeable!!

As a result of an agreement between British insurance companies and Fiat, the code you refer to is not issued to the owner of a new Fiat. The dealer will let you know the code if it is required. It is not a key code as such but a code to input if the car immobilises itself. It is highly unlikely that you will ever need this code.

This is one of the first things I noticed when I took delivery of my Active last October. It didnt bother me though as I had a spare key and if I needed any more I would use the dealer anyway.

I popped into the dealers a couple of weeks later to get my rear plate fitted properly. Anyway an older guy came in and kicked off BIG style. He slammed his owners book down and started shouting about how he wasnt given his code. He was giving the guy at the dealers some right stick. The salesman tried his best to explain but the guy wasnt having any of it. Luckily my car was sorted and I left them too it. I thought the guy was a complete idiot to be honest. There was no need to kick off like that just because you didnt get a code that you would probably never need anyway.

Hopefully the dealer phoned the Police, or tw*tted the guy. That i'd have loved to see. Some people are just dic*s, he sounds like one of them.

Interesting, thanks. I can see that makes sense - what's the point in having an immobiliser if its possible for a thief to nick your car because the key code is kept in the glovebox etc.

Shame the manual isn't updated to reflect that!

Glad I asked here first!!

I agree that the arguement is often lost once you've lost your temper.

However, this may have been the last in a long line of issues that the guy has had with his car/the dealer. While his behaviour was probably over the top, in these circumstances, it might be understandable.

When my original dealer messed up on a simple service, I did complain both to them and then to Fiat UK.

The guy didnt have any previous issues he had only just bought his car. He explained it all while shouting but I didnt go into too much detail when I posted. I think it was a brand new Bravo he had just recently taken delivery of. He didnt give the sales guy a chance he just stormed in and was off. I can totally understand it when people kick off for a reason but not for something so trivial. It might be worth worrying about when you lose a key but until then why did it matter?

Can't remember if Fiat do the same, but Vauxhall's manual packs come with a slip explaining the UK insurance companies don't let them supply the code.

Here's the reply I got from Fiat UK in August 2007 when I queried exactly the same thing about our Multijet.
The dealer (Evans Halshaw) actually went off in search of their premises to see if the code card had been removed (they probably hadn't been asked about it before..)

Thank you for contacting the Fiat Information Centre.

In relation to your enquiry, Fiat do not supply Code card with new vehicles any more. It is possible to obtain the code card for your vehicle. The International Security Register keeps the codes, the process of getting these is through an authorized Fiat dealership. They need proof of ownership of the vehicle, preferably your V5 form. The dealer then forwards these details onto the ISR where they will retrieve the codes that you need.

Please be informed that the International Security Register is not available for general enquiries and can only be accessed through an authorised Fiat dealership/servicing agent.

If you require further assistance or need to know the whereabouts of other authorised Fiat dealership please go to www.fiat.co.uk. Alternatively, please do not hesitate to contact the Information Centre on 00800 3428 0000. Office hours are Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm. Any one of our Customer Service Representatives will be happy to assist with your enquiries.

Best regards,

Fiat Information Centre

They try not to give it (reacon its security), but I'd go back and insist they give it to you. Will cost £15 to get later down the line if needed (n)

Yep, i spotted this when i picked mine up. They tried fobbing me off but after about 10 mins of me obviously not going away, they made a phone call and presto there was the code. So go back and insist they give it to you (y)

Hi! This is an old string! Quite a few years in I needed that code (lost a key) and eventually got it to get new key cut at trusted key bods). I am still with the original 09 Panda Active Eco and renewing insurance. The security Qs come up... Thatcham Approved Alarm +/ Immobiliser? I haven't a clue if there is an alarm (it's never made any noises (but has been broken into a free times and lock messed up) unlike my Multipla which wakes the neighbourhood up!) and there is nothing in the glitzy 'standard and optional equipment' or the handbook (nothing between airvents & ashtray - Multipla also - or immobiliser!!). As a result I seem to have been 'lying' to insurance companies.... I shall amend now! Only immobiliser (but is it Thatcham approved?). This is pretty basic info that needs to be highlighted for (compulsory) insurance!

You could always cover your back by telling the insurance company that the car has whatever security was fitted in the factory as standard, but that no additional security has been fitted.
