I can't remember the title, or even who was in it

All I do remember is a little of the plot, the heroe is a newspaper reporter on a small newspaper and at the begining of the film, his best friend either dies or commits suicide (cant rememeber which) and the newspaper guy ingerits his bike and proptly chucks his job in and goes riding across america.

It was a pretty low budget film, cant recall any big stars in it at all

I saw it ages ago on sky, one of those "late night fillers" lol Think it came out just after easy rider, the peter fonda film.

I am almost sure the title had the heroes name in it.
