Hi Guys (& Girls),

Need some help here please.

I have a Punto JTD 1.9 on an X plate and the ABS has started working every time I use the brakes. There is no associated ABS warning light so this suggests to me that the system is working correctly ( or thinks it is).

I had noticed previously that if I was braking while on full right lock the ABS activated (ie when turning into a parking space etc). Thinking this was the problem I thought it may just be the sensor on the right front so I decided to give it a clean. Unfortunatly when trying to remove the sensor it sheared off in the hole so I have had to get one of these...only a cable with a sensor on the end so should be quite cheep I thought....£55 quid later:eek:

Anyway, while I am still waiting for this cable does anyone have any other suggetsions as to what I may need to do or what may be causing this please. I see some have suggested cleaning the sensors on the back drums but is there an easy way to clean the front ones without removing them? Can't afford another £55 quid:mad:

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

Hi SPD,

The sensor I am getting from the local FIAT dealer but not the FIAT own one, it is a BOSCH version. The FIAT one was £65. All the other quotes I got were in the £65 range.

When you say the ring do you mean the magnetic ring around the hub on the back brakes?

Cheers

Try a local factor for sensors.

The rings are not magnetic, they are toothed, The sensor sees the teeth moving, or in you case doesn't see them moving so assumes the wheel is stopped and tries to activate the ABS.

HI,

Just thought I would update on the progress made to assist anyone else with the same problem.

On stripping down the rear drums the nearside rear ring sensor around the hub was covered in brake dust so cleaned this completely and the sensor too.
The offside rear ring on the hub which appears to be made of some sort of rubber looked like it had been rubbing against something and had a groove worn away around the centre. I cleaned this rubber ring and tried a test drive but this just made the ABS warning light come on i ndicating a problem with the system now.I figured that this was probably due to the hub damage so ended up getting a new hub (best price for this was from shop4parts.co.uk £48+vat+postage.

Fitted the new hub and swiched on the ignition but the ABS warning light was still on:mad:

Put it all back together and decided to take it on a test drive anyway. As soon as I went past about 15mph (which it the ABS trigger speed I think?) the warning light went out and the system is working fine now :D

SPD, the ring didn't appear to be toothed, just a ring of rubber/silicon. I know what you mean by toothed though, works the same as a phonic wheel system just with magnetic pulses I think? Thanks for your help.

Hope this clarifies it for anyone else who has the same problem.
