Hey.

Ok so for a couple of years now, I've found myself somewhat intrigued by the marea's, after owning a couple of bravo hgt's, that I was very fond of. Recently with the dog, and frequent longer commutes, I found myself needing (fancying, wanting!) and estate. It was always going to be either an alfa sportwagon, or a marea weekend, as much as I like various other makes, I can't seem to stray from Italian motors!

Anyway, to see if I would like and could live with the marea, I bought and briefly owned a 1.9 jtd 105, I loved it, it ticked all my boxes, the only thing I wasn't so happy with was that, although it was a revy, lively little engine, it just didn't really float my boat, so to speak, I'd often find my self absolutely thrashing it to get any enjoyment out of it what so ever, but I can hardly complain, when the thing would get me 700 miles to a tank!!!.... the main thing was over all, I liked it.

The plan was, if I did like it, I'd buy a better one. So after a while of twiddling thumbs and patently waiting, a 2.4 jtd 130 hlx popped up. It wasn't my favourite choice of colours, but with these been so rare now, who was I to be fussy! After getting in contact with the guy, I knew right then I wanted it.

Full service history
14 stamps in the service book
Remote locking/alarm (something my 1.9 never had!)
All 3 keys Inc red key
Hlx model, so Aircon/ all the toys
List goes on..

The guy I bought it from was 55 and had owned the car 10 years, no boy racer by any means, and when I tell you that the car was maitained rigorously, money no object, I'm not lying, See pic below!

Body work was 100 times better than my last one, and aswell as the huge service history, under the bonnet and interior were both immaculate, I had to take it. It was originally for sale for 990, before I set off to buy it we agreed on 650, and by the time cash and paperwork changed hands, I got her for 500 quid with 3/4 tank of fuel!!! Chuffed!

To drive, the first thing I noticed was the huge masses of low down torque, the 1.9 never had, the car felt so solid and tight to drive, no usual suspension clunks, or knocks just a nice quiet solid drive, the clutch is heavy with plenty of pedal, and the steering felt heavier than the 1.9 but I really liked that, adds to the solid feel of the car.

Anyway after the turbo kicked in at about 1000 rpm, it would pull with a huge surge of torque to about 2700 rpm, then suddenly go flat, as if you'd hit a brick wall! And then literally had no pull at all, I wasn't worried at all, obvious signs of needing a good clear out and a genuine maf! But the cambelt was due and I didn't want to push it. The first few times I hoofed it, the amount of sh**e that came out the back was like a bond style smoke screen! But each lime it got considerably less, and the car felt a bit quicker. Although still had bugger all up the top end, the previous owner told me he'd only ever driven it for economy, I believe him lol! He's clearly never took at above 3k!

I'd usually do all this my self, but my garage is full at present, but also because I wanted to keep ontop of the cars maintenance, and also keep the service book upto date, I just used my friends garage for this one.

Timing belt kit
Water pump
Aux belt
Air filter
Oil and filter
Coolant flush
Air con re-gass
Genuine bosch maf (mates rates)
And a fuel filter.

Cost 450 quid, almost as much as I paid for the car lol, but we'll worth it! Should of been alot more, but I got all the parts, and all fluids at what it costs him, and he's a legend so I'm very happy.

What a difference to drive now, I can't stress enough the difference of a bosch maf! Compared to the sh**te oe ones you can pick up for 20 quid! After brimming the tank with v-power (mixed with a little cetane booster :D) and thrashing the arse of it for 100 miles, the Turbo now kicks in at 1000 rpm, hits full boost and peak torque by 2000 rpm, and then just pulls like a freight train to its limiter! Yesterday in the wet I was really struggling for grip first 3 cogs, and it hits 120 mph faster than you'd think possible for a deisel! I reckon it would easily scran my old hgt, and yet gets me mid 40's to the gallon! Absolutely chuffed with the car inside out.

Got a few toys ordered from the old tintenet, plans are:
Hid's
Lowering springs
Uprated dampers
Not sure what I'm doing for wheels yet...
Better tyres
EGR is getting completely removed
Front mount intercooler
And a tuning box or remap.

All mods will be subtle, and the car must look oem, last thing I want to do is ruin it, and performance mods will be done to get the most out of it both power wise and economically.

Also I'll probably be doing something with the exhaust, I never knew a deisel motor could ever sound nice, not even a 5 pot, bought you want to hear this! And it's standard! Over all I'm happy, I now have a mechanically sound wagon, I throw the dog in, still get decent mpg's from and tare about and have fun in when I choose to. Done 1000 mile now, it doesn't smoke at all now and doesn't use a drop of oil, I think she might just be a good car.

Only thing I don't like about the car is the number plate! It's a bit gae..y! Oh well!

I've not had a chance to take any pictures yet but I'll leave you with these and take more, when I update the cars progress.

:)

Gave the bay a little clean up this morning, and completely removed the whole EGR system, using new gaskets and custom blanking plates, it's 100% slightly improved the performance again!

Gave her a hoover out this morning, wet vacked the seats and door cards, just waiting on some seat covers, new tailored floor mats and a tailored boot carpet protector arriving now, so I can keep the interior pristine! Dogs staying out of it until then! :p

Thanks mate (y)

Yeah hopefully, it really is a great car for what it is, I've never been a fan of deisels, and never thought I'd go and buy one, let alone buy it and enjoy it! And the economical...Ness (if that's a word :D) is unbelievable, I don't know why I never bought one sooner!

I've got a bit tied in the pipeline for this one, bit of a winter project wile I potter on with my coupe, but at least by the time I'm done, I'll have restored a rare old fiat, back to her former glory and kept her away from automotive heaven a little while longer :)

Thanks guys :)

That 105 I had, I almost regret selling it, I've never owned such an economical car, and don't think I ever will again, I never knew if mine was ever running 100% as it always felt laggy for a jtd, there was very little pull before 2000rpm, but it seemed to like being revved, with its power band between 2.5 and 4.5k. Where as my dad's multipla 115 jtd (identical engine) comes in much harder low down from about 1.5k but seems to run out of around 3.8k ish... Strange. The 2.4 seems to be on a different level, I can floor it from 900rpm (idles at 800) in any gear, and it will just pull, slowly but steady to around 1.5k, then it starts to build boost, comes on harder to 2k revs, then pulls like it's possessed to its limiter lol, that has a very broad power bant. I don't have to use any revs at all setting off, even setting of in 2nd is like first, it's just a torquey brute! When I'm in it I think I'm driving a tank lol

1 of the tyres we're borderline illegal, so I just swapped the wheels over, to a set of rare fiat fitment borbets, that came with my 105 (these are for sale by the way with 4 new nexen n8000 tyres, message me if interested) then gave her a good clean today, didn't scrub up too bad for a 14 yr old bus! No further progress as I'm still waiting on parts

Oh, I did d-badge the car, only because the badges were all faded, I'll probably get new ones, the wheels are just temporary, personally not my cupper Tbh.

Couple pics, after the clean, parked next to my other half.

Remeber that the engine has lower oil pressure at idle, so dont try pulling it constantly from there.

The 2.4 is nice, the multijet runs over 200hp stock on it.
If you upgrade, consider alfa 159 with it, nice car.
It has its own issues, and DPF system...

I will definitely be having a 159 next year, although I'll probably be going for the newer 2.0l jdtm 170 bhp or the 200 bhp 1.75 petrol turbo. That 2.4 jdtm is a monster, but very costly service wise, duel mass fly and clutch will set you back best part of 2k alone, they eat tyres and not very economical at all. They are some bit of kit though. Still a bit too pricey for me atm, should come down a bit in the next year or so. Currently can't justify 10k+ for a second car used mainly for commuting and putting the pooch in, and the 380 ponies in the coupe, keep me entertained enough to not need another toy :)

Good one about the pressure, I'll keep that in mind (y)

Was also considering the 2.4 croma before I bought the weekend, as there dirt Cheap now, but there like hens teeth at present.

scrubs up very well indeed, looks a damn sight better than my paintwork.
in a way, it's nice to hear that all the engines have a similar power band from that era, my TD100 does not a lot under 2000 revs, which is fine for setting off, and pootling economically around town in 3rd and 4th, but at 2000-2200 it really kicks in, and roars up to 3500-4000, and then drops off.
i did notice my power band changed slightly when i changed the injector pump, must have been calibrated slightly differently, or had stiffer/newer seals for the boost adjustment thingamybob.

Thanks guys :)

Thanks for your comments guys, and haha, your right there Miguel! They do think I'm mad lol, but at the same time there kinda pleased about the marea. With working unsociable hours, I'm either out the door first thing in the morning or last thing at night, apparently my 3" streight through system from the turbo back on my coupe, makes every single window on the estate vibrate :D, although the the 2.4 is quite noisy on start up, I reckon they'll be able to sleep through it, and much prefer me driving it daily :D

I wish I could agree on the borbets, but I just hate them, I really want them sold (no reasonable offer refused) I think there ok from certain angles, but awful at others  I really want a set of marea turbo alloys from Brazil but that ain't happening! On my last marea the borbets would catch on the rear when the car was dropped 40mil, and was ripping the tyre side walls to peices and damaging the arches, even with a empty boot, they just stick out too far. I can't live with them without lowering the car because the arch gap is so much more noticeable, and looks like a jeep, so they have to go! So I've decided to stick to the standard wheels for now.

Not got much of an update, been flat out at work, doing some crazy hours at the minute. I did get a chance today to pick my standard wheels up from my garage (10 mile from where I live) I loaded the boot and took them to my local tyre shop and had the tyres removed, ready for refurb.

Need your guys help on choosing a colour! What would go best with the dark green? I'm thinking some kind of gray but undecided! My plan is to refurb the wheels, mate them to a new set of 195/50/15's rather than the 195/60/15's that were on (far too rolley) drop the car 40mm front and rear and space the wheels out as much as I can get away with. Then I think she'll look sweet.

So come on guys, what colour? I'd also be interested to know, those of you with aftermarket suspension, what you're running and how you rate it?

Cheers :)

Lovely to keep clean in our lovely brittish weather too!

Haha I'm painting the wheels, not the car lol, a colour change would cost quite a tad more than I'd want to spend on a marea I reckon!

Yes it's a great car, but I would say...

DON'T put the wrong size tyres on it

DON'T bother lowering it (sorry but the Coupe looks way too low)

Medium Anthracite colour would look OK against the green.

I think the car has survived long enough as standard spec with a careful caring owner to deserve being preserved but appreciated, without being turned into a hot-rod custom project. "Optimised standard" is the way to go I reckon... that seems to be your basic idea too.
