Just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to the guys that have responded to my cries for assistance over the past few weeks. (y)
As a result I got a clutch working and had good pointers for tailgate washer problems etc.

This morning I drove it to a local garage run by an ex-RAF mechanic mate to go through the MOT test so that I would know what I was facing. I did not expect a pass but thought I might get away with a £100 or so.

I got the dreaded phone call: (n)
- DANGER point - fuel tank has a leak. new tank needed + fitting
- Emissions indicate the Cat Converter has gone. new needed + fitting
-Both sides front brake pipes dangerous and need replacement. And I drove it to the garage !!!!!!!!!
- low % brake efficiency on one side.
- Two tyres need replacement. lesser of other evils!
Minimum, including labour at very reasonable rate, £700.00 which I'm afraid just made it not worth while.

About the only thing that was ok was the clutch that I'd got working with the help of this forum !

End result is that I drove it about 100 yards to the scrapyard and got £60.00 for it, and I removed the new battery!

Thanks again for your assistance. If I, or a family member, ever own a Fiat I will be back. (My own car is the Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe 2.0i with the retractable hardtop).

Cheers
Dave

i would have sold you a tank for £20, don't see how its leaking though as they are plastic so dont rust.
braske pipes are covered by a recal from fiat so they may have done them for free.
new cats are about £56 + vat and are 3 nuts and a 10 minuet job
low % brake efficiency on one side? front or back

Well, thanks for all the replies, even if some of them did make me feel like a tw@t !
I haven't done much on cars for the past 30 years, don't have the tools or facilities for DIY car mechanics, or the knowledge, but I am sure you are all correct (apart from the comment about getting rid of my MX-5 although all the great guys on this Forum would make me lean towards a fiat next time, maybe the coupe, or even the Barchetta).

If I had the time as well it would help but with 2 old ladies living with us (mother and mother in law), a daughter still at home, two garages filled with kids stuff when the other two are back and forward to university.

I paid 18 quid for a Haynes Manual, it did pay for itself in fixing the couple of bits I managed to do so I'll hang onto it for the future!

Tell you what, when the Oldies have gone, one way or another, i'm going to buy an old Punto or something similar, and hit you lot with more questions as I find my way around it.

Cheers.

Mazda mx5 there tiny inside the passanger has to get out if you want to open the glove box!!!:D

OK, can't resist it. here's my MX-5. Oh, and by the way, I've been a Bond fan since 1962 (see the reg plate) so I am also an even sadder old git than you first thought!
