Our 2013 4x4 TA with 121k on the clock got through its MOT with a couple of minors…
It’s used for my son to learn to drive in (as well as me bobbing around in it when I get chance.). Most runs 40 mins or so.
I popped out today in it for 20 mins. Tried to give it a good run as it’s slow with low revs on the lessons.
No warning lights on the dash but when I parked I opened the bonnet and realised the coolant was bubbling- had boiled over with coolant around the reservoir and the level dropped. I topped it up and we’ve just been for a 30 mins driving practice with my son. Checked it on my return- even though it was a short low speed run the coolant was really hot again with signs of more leakage/boil over.
I can’t see any leaks from the hoses attached to the reservoir. It doesn’t seem to be dumping coolant when parked. Water pump seems to be working as I can see the coolant being pulled through when revved. Any suggestions? Could it be a thermostat or something more sinister?

My first thought would be thermostat as anything else would have a sensor and probably turn on a warning light.
Then check the fan is working as expected and that the radiator has not become blocked internally AND externally. Also the water pump may have packed up.
