If I pull away fast in 1st gear with the steering turned in my 4X4 I notice for a brief period a grating noise from the front of the car. Anyone else get this or know the cause of it?

Could be brief wheel-spin? No, don't laff, mine does it sometimes...

See if it does it with the wheel on full lock on the other side. If the noise changes sides you could be the first rubber-burning tyre-smokin son-of-a-gun Panda burnout merchant.

Otherwise, if it gets worse, you're in for a trip to the dealer. But check those tyre pressures before you do much else.. Oh, and check the wheel nuts for tightness. Just to be sure.

Want to revive this thread cos I think this noise might be from gearbox. This because I have just clocked up 1250 miles going down to Normandy and back and as had windows open and not travelling fast noticed quite a lot of gearbox noise.
Now at nearly 50 and being a bit of an amateur mechanic I have seen a lot of damage done even by reputable dealers when they carry out major tasks and will admit have made my own cock-ups. Especially in view of thread about Panda engine falling out, should I wait and see on this noise or see if dealer thinks transmission fix needed? Personally I'm inclined to wait. I am in lucky position that if after 3 years ownership when out of warranty this car turns out to be a lemon I can just trade in and replace. Don't want it off the road (is this why they are called off-roaders?) if a repair is started.
Re wheelspin, anyone who can get wheelspin in a 4x4 on anything other than ice is a better man than me.
