Technical 2002 punto 1.2 starter motor problem

Hi please can anyone help?? When I turn ignition on dash lights up but won't crank I've tested it and there power going to solinoid but nothing else. Any ideas welcome thanks

this is a mk2 punto, did you try jump starting it or push start? if car starts with push start it is probably bad starter motor

try hitting solenoid with a hammer

Thanks yes its a Mk 2 just replaced starter motor and still same prob there is a drumming noise coming from fuse box in engine bay. Could a crack in the neg battery lead decrease power going to starter??

code would stop it turning over no. Sounds to me like either a bad earth (either battery to body or body to gearbox) or the battery itself to me. Disconnect the earth leads and clean the contact area up (i.e. not just wipe them, scratch up the surface with sandpaper or the like so you have clean shiny surfaces )and reattach them - then try it.

If no luck get the battery tested, they can read 12v still but not have the ability to deliver the required current to turn the starter (biggest electrical drawing item on the car)

To answer the question, A crack in the casing of the wire, no, if the wire itself is damaged then Yes as increased resistance will affect the available current available to start the motor.


The noise from the fusebox will be a relay, replace the one causing the noise and then see what happens.

Key code WONT stop it cranking
it stops it sparking and injecting on the punto

Since your is a non cranking situation
My advice is get a Black (negative) jump lead

Stick it on the negative (black) terminal on the battery
And attach it to the engine mount on the engine - Not the engine mount on the body
And then crank the car over

Does it crank now
Yes - You've got a grounding (earthing) issue, which is ontop of the gearbox running to the body - then body to negative termianl on the battery
Give these connections a good clean with sand paper (take them off)

No - It sounds like there MAY be a 12v feed issue TO the starter, or there is another issue occouring which i cant comment on without been there

Can you remove the cover of the engine fusebox and find out which relay is 'drumming' ?

again, bad earth can cause relay to constantly click - my money is on an earth - i didn't read the bit about the crack in negative lead before and this just leads you even further down that path. Test with the jump lead Ziggy suggested will confirm but its almost 100% gonna be that

I had a starter motor issue - renewed it - it didn't start but I
had clicking coming from a relay in the Engine bay fuse box and from my Petrol pump in rear. Bad Earth was the cause!! You all sorted it So THANKYOU!!
