Hello everyone, new to the forum..

Recently I got a Y reg punto 1.2 8v.. It was running rough and when you revved it up there was a loud metalic tapping..

Stripped the head down and found the headgasket was blown in 2 places.. Also it has serious piston slap? Its only done 88K..

Anyway didnt bother messing about bought another bottom end with 48K on.. with no piston slap.. Started to build it all up when I realised the crank sensor was in a slightly different place on the new block? So tried to swap the bracket over which is the bracket with the oil pump, filter etc on.. and it wont fit off the old engine because on this new one the crank is thicker?? What engine have I just bought?! It was supposed to be a 1.2 8v.. The pistons are both the same size on both engines but it seems the crank is thicker.. The engine came out of a 53 plate and mine is a Y reg..

Anyway.. Made up a braket so that the crank sensor is counting the teeth on the pulley again but the gap is slightly bigger due to me having to make a bracket? Will this effect anything?

As iv built it all back up and iv got no spark.. Before I stripped it down I marked all electrical plugs and HT leads with numbers etc.. So I know they are back where they came out..

Iv got fuel to the rail but I dont know if the injectors are spraying.. I tipped a cap of fuel straight into the carb and it still didnt fire so took spark plug 1 out and there is no spark..

Coil pack problem? Does the coil pack run off the crank sensor signal? If so is it because the gap is bigger that its not working? But surely I would still get a spark but just at the wrong time?

If anyone could shed some light on this that would be awesome..

Cheers
Chaz

EDIT: Heres the link for the engine I bought.. If you can see it?

Because Iv had to use the crank pulley from the old engine because the new one didnt come with the flywheel, clutch, crank pulley etc..

Anyone think the gap is too big??

What has happened there is that you bought the bottom end from a 2003 car of Mk2a Puntos.
Your car though is a Y reg (early 2001 I think).
The Mk2a 8v Punto's have slight differences from half way through as they changed the engines a bit. For example, mine is a W reg which doesn't have a cam sensor and stuff, but the newer engines (after 51 plate I think) have got it.

Although I wasn't aware that the crank sensor was moved a bit, I guess thats another thing they have changed.

Thanks lads..

Tweaked the bracket I made.. And it struck straight up.. All sorted now..

Theres no engine management light on but I checked the fault codes with my reader and its saying cam sensor circuit open so Im guessing il need a new one of them now.. It hasn't effected performance or running in anyway but il sort it anyway!

So was the engine I bought still a 1.2 8v? How come the crank was a lot thicker on this one?? I heard about theres a 60 BHP 8v and a 75 BHP 8v..

Is this true?? Do you think iv got the 75 BHP version? As it seems to be a lot quicker than before.. and the induction is quite a bit more beefier lol..

GOK. Certainly the later 1.2 and 1.4 16v have a different pulley/crank sensor arrangement -- someone even did a lovely CAD drawing in the Cento section. Seems the oil pumps (which determine the location) are different (although they have the same capacity). Some folk have just swapped the oil pumps over.

I tried that but the crank was a lot thicker on the new bottom end so it wouldnt go through the hole on the oil pump from the old bottom end..

Yes its still 1.2 8v I think.

Not sure on the 75 bhp though. It could be the Mk1 8v engine.
