Thanks Andytw, I read all that, quite interesting that other people get similar problems, but my vehicle doesn't appear to have an electric fuel pump or a primer. Thanks for providing the link.

I think the primer referred to is a hand held type used for a one-off priming session and not part of the vehicle. Like http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/tools/hand-tools/laser-diesel-fuel-pump-priming-tool

I think you have just the injection pump and everything else, pipes, filter etc must be SOLID with fuel and no air. No need then for a seperate pump as the injection pump will do all the work but any air in anything will ruin the whole operation.

Thanks again Andytw, that pump looks like the answer to my problems, I'll go and get one today and once it stops raining I can try out. The local Halfords has them in stock so I've reserved one to collect later.

SOME filter heads had a built in primer pump..

Mine didnt..but have seen a few on french diesels of the era

Couldn't be something like the wrong key could it. Wifey mislaid her car keys, not for the camper, I found a spare key but when trying it I found it only manually opens the doors and spins the engine but won't fire it up. I assume it doen't have a security chip in it.

I bought the primer pump from Halfords and fitted it in line to the injector pump. Squeezed the bulb for a few minutes, tried the starter and it started almost straightaway. Wow what a result! Thank you to everybody for your help and suggestions.
As I had to cut the feed pipe to insert the primer pump is it safe to leave it connected permanently or should I join the pipes back to each other?

Well done. Glad we were pointing you in the right direction..

Permanently fixed..?
your call : does it look durable enough to cope with temps and vibes..

It is securely clipped away from any other parts, but I'm not sure about leaving it in line, if I can get a small length of steel tube of the correct OD I might put that in and keep the primer in the van in case it ever happens again.

Or replace the piece of pipe you have cut....is that possible ?

Pipes and joiners here...

I thought about doing that but the end connected to the injection pump is very difficult to get to, so I'll just use a connector to join the two cut ends. I've decided to leave the primer pump in line until I next use the van in case there is a similar problem when I next try to use it, unlikely to be before next April I guess. Once again thank you all for helping me to solve the problem.

If the priming bulb is properly fitted leave it there, many vehicles have them in line.

Thanks digger. I'm not sure what will be the best. I spoke to a local mechanic and he said after a period of use the one way valve could fail so it's not worth taking the risk, keep it safe in the van and then it will be ok for the next time it's required. So as I said I'll leave it inline until my next holiday, but having learned a lesson this time I will remember to start the van about once a month just to be sure.

I've had numerous cars over the years with them, several Citroens as an example, never had one fail. Why take it out? you risk getting air in the fuel line in doing so, then you're back to square 1! If you do need to bleed it then you're going through the whole procedure again, Just leave it there, Many cars had them fitted day one and they worked perfectly. If it does fail just replace the bulb. Make up your own mind but I would leave it in situ.

The Halfords one is a laser bulb - read the reviews its a POS, better off getting one from an old 306 or something in the scrap yard.

Totally agree, I didn't see the post about buying in Halfords, get a proper one from a scrappie and leave it there. I very rarely buy there unless absolutely necessary, Did get a decent leisure battery there earlier in the year with 3 yrs warranty and a 10% discount with AXA card, worked out €35 cheaper than the next nearest!

OK, just read the reviews  However if its working at the moment and not leaking it should be Ok till you can find a decent replacement. All of my Xantias had decent ones fitted day one so thats another donor vehicle.

Thank you both for your comments and advice, I'll see if I can obtain a better quality one and then would feel happier about leaving it in situ.
