Re: 1.9 JTD Multiwagon engine cutting out

Hi there,

Just my tuppence in case it is not the crank sensor.

I had the same loose connection messsage and after taking it to Fiat found that it was a problem with bad earthing from the ECU.

They also found that the connections in/out of the ECU were very grimy/corroded so replaced all the leads.

Once that was done I have not had a problem since.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Jamie

Re: 1.9 JTD Multiwagon engine cutting out

Hello, My name is Hans and I'm from the Netherlands.

I did buy my Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD 115 Pk in 2003, but I think it is build early 2002. Engine version 192BXE1A 09
I have had a lot of problems with it, to much to tel here.

Recently the problem is similar to what is described here but,
I do not have the “Lose connection” warning.
The motor stops running, I get a “Engine Failure” and sometimes “Low oil pressure“
I have to wait a couple of minutes before it will start again.
Sometimes I also hear a gargling sound form behind when a turn on the contact key.

The dealer cant find the problem and advices to replace a € 300,- part and pray for good luck.

NO WAY. :slayer:

Can this be the same problem or can I better have inspection at the fuel pomp first.
Can I do some measurement to find if the crank sensor is okay or not?
I have the backseat on a real sliding forward and backward, believe the fuel tank is underneath, any advice how to get there?
Well thats a lot of questions for a newbie is it not.

Hans.

A fault code must be stored for those problems.

Has the garage not told you the error code?

Re: 1.9 JTD Multiwagon engine cutting out

Nop,

There was no error code.
So noting to tell is there.
Wandering if I could put an oscilloscope on then rpm sensor.
Also the OBD interface I purchased did not tel me much.

That can't be right.

Have you tried testing your OBD code reader (are you sure it's compatible?)

Removing the MAF connector ALWAYS stores a code.

Re: 1.9 JTD Multiwagon engine cutting out

Hi again,

If there is no error code will this mean it is NOT the RPM- /Crank- sensor?

I mean the OBD interface did not help to solve the problem. :bang:

It is a ElmScan USB interface and i get the most information with the program wOBD.
But not the information i like to see like the Fuel pressure.
I have been thinking the fuel pomp stops working, not sure now anymore.
I get the following information out of the interface.
Throttle Position(%) 298,82

Engine RPM(rpm) 257

Vehicle Speed(kph) 255 :p no not true

Ignition Advance(Deg) No information
Intake Air Temp(C) 215

Air Flow(gm/sec) 8,36
Calculated Engine Load(%) 100
Coolant Temp(C) 215

Fuel Pressure(psiG) No information
Manifold Air Pressure(psi) 36,975

If you have recommendations for another (freeware) program or interface, please do tell me. :D

Regards, Hans.

Sorry to say Hans but your JTD is NOT OBDII compliant :(

This thread should make it much clearer.

You need to buy a program called "Italia Check" (or something like that) from Gendan software (www.gendan.co.uk)

For some reason they aren't bothering to list it on their site so best to email them and ask about it.

Re: 1.9 JTD Multiwagon engine cutting out

Hi Guys sorry its took me so long to update you. Your advice was spot on (y)(y)(y)

IT Was the crank shaft sensor. My local repair shop replaced it after the diagnostic confirmed a faulty Crank shaft sensor. All is now well and my Stilo is behaving as it should. :):):)

Thanks for all the help (y)

Engine Cutting Out & "Loose Connexion" Error

Hi,

Has anyone experienced this or can suggest what the problem might be…..

I’ve got a 53 plate 3 door JTD that’s done 65000 almost trouble free miles (only problem has been the suspension snapping).

Over the last 2 days, my engine has cut out 6 times with no warning – I get 3 beeps from the dashboard and “Loose connexion” error message on the LCD display.

When this happens the car will not immediately start again – the engine turns over but will not start. If I leave it about 5 minutes, the engine will start – I then get “Engine fault” displayed on the display and a yellow symbol. The car will then go another 1 – 30 miles before cutting out again. When it’s going, there is no apparent reduction in performance despite the “Engine fault” message.

I got the RAC out the first time it happened but the mechanic could not find any loose connections (and I got home without any further problem).

I can see this being expensive to diagnose….. Would a Fiat dealer have equipment that would identify the problem even if it wasn’t evident at the time – I don’t see them wanting to take it for a long drive.

If anyone can give me any pointers I’d put it into a local garage with your advice……

Any thoughts / suggestions welcome!

As above Techs have said definately the crank sensor, about £23 from dealer and one bolt to remove it. :)

Re: Engine Cutting Out & "Loose Connexion" Error

Guys,

Many thanks for your quick replies and suggestions.

I'm arranging to get the car into the garage beginning of the week - I'll let you know how I get on. I hope they can fix it as I've got a 400 mile motorway trip the following week and I dont want to break down every 30 miles!!!

Thanks again!

Hi,

As the other guys have suggested you, it's your crank senson. I ran into the same problem a month ago. The new crank senson cost me 120 lev. ,about 62Euro.

Re: Engine Cutting Out & "Loose Connexion" Error

Hi,

An interim update…..

The earliest I could get the car booked in at the local Fiat dealership was Wednesday. I left the car on Monday night in case they could get to work on it earlier – I haven’t used it since the problems began as I didn’t want to risk it breaking down on a motorway or busy roundabout etc. Fortunately I have access to another car while it is off the road.

I got a phone call on Thursday morning to ask for my authorisation to order a “RPM sensor” at a cost of £23 (spot on MiniMad99!). When that was fitted it might need “further investigation…..”

I’m not mechanically minded and so have Googled RPM sensor Stilo – I see it and the crank sensor are one and the same!

As I write this, I’m waiting on a call back from the dealer – I hope I’m not going to get a bill for 3 day’s labour and a £23 part!

Hi,

RPM/Crack sensor are the same thing. ;)

Re: Engine Cutting Out & "Loose Connexion" Error

Hi,

Apologies for the delay on letting you know how I got on….. I went on holiday the day after I got the car back.

I finally got the car back at 4.45pm on the 3rd day – the total cost was £129.04 inc VAT to diagnose the problem (I’d told them what it was likely to be based on your feedback!), supply and fit an RPM Sensor and test the car.

I wish I knew what I was doing with car engines…..

Although the repair resolved the problem (I had a 400 mile drive the next day), I cant say I was impressed with how long it took – I’d left the car on Monday night….. It was booked in for Wednesday….. I got a call on Thursday morning to ask for my approval to order the part - it arrived Friday morning - but it took to 4.45pm to complete the repair….. I would have thought that they could have established what was wrong on Day1, ordered the part (if they didn’t have it in stock) and fit it on Day 2. Fortunately I had access to another car.

Thanks all once again for your assistance (y)

Re: Engine Cutting Out & "Loose Connexion" Error

Hi T14086,

That’s right, it was booked in for Wednesday – but by leaving it on Monday night I thought it would be one of the first jobs allocated to a mechanic on Wednesday….. I had stopped using it the previous week because I was concerned about the engine failing while driving to work (mostly on busy dual carriageways).

Given how many guys had said correctly what the problem was likely to be I hoped that the dealer would have the part available so that I could give the car a run when I got it back to make sure everything was OK before going on holiday last Saturday.
