Sticky start

Hi Chaps,
My 1.6 Stilo dynamque has been laid up for six months or so. I needed to jump start the battery and the car started immediately with no noise from the starter motor, every thing seemed fine. I then drove the car non stop for about 2 hours to give thebattery a good charge. I then get home turn the engine of. Try to restart the engine but it appears that the starter motor is not working, as it now makes a clicking noise and refuses to start.
Does anybody have any ideas as to how or what I can do to resolve this, i.e. what do I hit, and where is the starter motor located. Any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks guys Ian.

Re: Sticky start

get a new battery or a trickle charger (in latter case trickle charge your old battery for 24 hours or until the light goes green if you are getting a smart one.. but not exceeding 24 hours ;-) i’d be guessing your battery has had it though.. once it spends long enough discharged a chemical reaction occurs that cannot be reversed

Re: Sticky start

I had the same thing with my one. No matter how long I drove it for, the battery would die if I played the music for 10 mins without the engine running or if I left her parked for 48hrs.

RAC checked the battery everytime they came out to start her up but couldn't find any problems with it. As they said that once they'd charged the battery it seemed to be holding it quite well??? Got a new battery in the end and that solved everything.

Re: Sticky start

Battery is US'ed mate. You just leave it in the car when not in use? Won't ever hold charge properly again and will probably need changing.

Should have connected one of these to it (y)

Re: Sticky start

Thanks for the replys gentlemen. You were all correct, it was the battery and not the starter motor as I thought, as the car started first time when I jump started the car. Thankfully a battery is a lot cheaper than a starter motor.
Once again thankyou for your help. Cheer's

Re: Sticky start

Your lucky. I had to flag down about 3 people before I got mine started. Didn't know that most new cars today had low voltage batteries. Tried an 09 plate Mazda 2, and a Citron then a white van. The battery nearly lumped out at me when it felt the white vans battery! lol :D

Re: Sticky start

My connectnav+ crashed the other week and drained my battery to the point of the same symptoms as the whatnoise. I didnt realise when I got out the car and when I got back in it wa on with a white line accross the screen.

Luckily a mate at work jumped started me with his suzuki swift, when he flipped the bonnet the battery was tiny, you should have heard it squealing when i started mine lol.

Re: Sticky start

same reason a discharged battery won't work - not enough amps to crank the engine

some bigger vehicles use 24 volt batteries btw

Re: Sticky start

Could mine be starter motor.

It keeps giving one click ( from starter motor I suppose )when turning the key.

Think the battery is OK though.
I have the car now for about a month and the dealer has put a new battery in as the old one was gone
Central locking ect works.

Tried my 12V halfords battery pack to jump it, made no difference.

Just got it to start a couple of times in a row ( nice strong start ) and then again just a tick .

Pleeeeeese help

Sorry.
Not sure if I can do this - this post is a reply from me to a differnt thread, but I thought I'd start a new thread

My 1.6 Dynamic will not start

My mechanic said it must be the starter motor, he will look at it on Monday.
How much should it cost me to have the startermotor replaced

Pleeeeeese help

Re: Sticky start

if not battery check starter motor.. as well as ground to alternator and engine

starter is held on by two screws - very easy to replace

i also have fiat stilo, which i have had the same problem replaced battery had parts fixed in the starter motor but the noise has returned and now my stilo has given up the go all together and hasnt started for 4 days now. it will start if pushed and jumped that way, but wont with jump leads. please please i need help!!

Re: Sticky start

Check the board on top of the battery. Theres a set of fuses on it, held in place with nuts that need to be tight/making good contact. If these are not on right, the plates the fuses are on just jiggle or dont sit right, so theres poor connection and the started wont go.

I sat for 4 hours in a car park last friday trying to sort my car as it wouldnt start after the battery went flat. Whole time was because i hadnt tightened up one nut on that board after taking the battery away to get charged.

Mine wouldnt jump with JL either, had to take the battery out, stick it in my dads 4x4 and let him drive around with it for a few hours to get enough juice in it.

i had a similar problem some years back and it maybe worth checking on yours. the cable that goes from the solenoid to the starter motor itself (little cylinder to big cylinder) - its looks like a small copper braid and is held on the solenoid with a 13mm (if i remember correcty) bolt. mine for some reason had worked loose and all i would get was a click when trying to start her and that would be it. i originally thought it was the starter knackard until i removed the unit then it became obvious what had happened. have a look and check its done up tightly before parting with any money.
