Hi everyone,

Just drove my friend home (must be literally a mile away, I was driving 5 minutes) when I got there, the engine started stuttering, spluttering, the exhaust is the same, almost panting gas out. I plugged my laptop into the OBD port and its stating I have a "Random Misfire" error... P0300.

I have read this code could mean a whole host of things. The ignition coils in the engine look a little worse for wear (previous owner has actually cable tied in the wires to the ignition coils!)

As a matter of fact I ordered some new NGK spark plugs which are on their way and should arrive tomorrow (which some sites have said might be the issue!)

Is there any way of diagnosing the fault yourself? Do I need new ignition coils?

Thanks in advance,
Phil

best way is to replace the coil pack,

Trouble is there are four packs, not one. Best way to find which one(s) are at fault is to run the engine at idle, then disconnect the LT wire to each one in turn. The coil(s) that make no difference to the misfiring when disconnected are the one(s) to replace.

thought it was like a mk2 punto, 2 packs in total, yeah, best way is to remove one LT lead at a time to find offending coil, then replace

Got it off some website, 35 delivered next day.

Took the ignition coil out about an hour ago, what a mess. The bolt had 2 washers on to gap it, it looks like someone has used a steel bolt on the engine block and cross threaded it.

The ignition coil wasn't even for the Stilo, admittedly it was similar. It was kind of longer, and more thin. But they had chopped the rubber bit at the bottom, to make it fit, but when it came out the rubber was split and the spring at the bottom was snapped (I think they over extended the spring to make the coil fit)

Anyway, entire mess. It was rattling in the cylinder too. Got a genuine part off the net anyway so that will be fitted tomorrow.

Thanks for all your help!

Hi everyone, this has been sorted now, thank you for all your help. It was the ignition coil, it was basically blown in two. Its running sweet again now :)
