Technical 07 GP 1.2 8v new battery,new alternator still wont work. any ideas?

Hi,
Ive got an 57 GP 1.2 8v.
Ive had it since new and it hasnt put a foot wrong.
Until last week.
The battery had completey died at work. I got a jump start and went to the garage. The battery was over 5yrs old so i got a new one.
The guy at the garage tested the alternator and said that it wasnt charging.
Bought a new alternator from eurocarparts. Made by RTX.
Fitted it with no problems and thats where the fun started.
Driving home the next day the fault lights came on one at a time then power steering died.
I called out the AA. He tested it and said that the alternator was charging. He then tested some stuff and decided that the IND cable was damaged.he put a cable from the alternator + terminal to the battery +.
I got it home and everything was fine. He said it would be ok for a couple of days until i got it fixed.
Went out this morning and the car completely died.
Im starting to think that i should have purchased a genuine fiat alternator.
Before i part with anymore cash can anyone confirm that non genuine alternators cause this and that a fiat replacement with cure it.

Yes you should. Check and replace all the cables from the alternator to starter/battery and all ground cables.

edit:

and don't start the car with a dead battery. Charge it first.

Quick update.
Ive just replaced the RTX alternator with a genuine denso one and all is good.
