Re: Service Indicator

Not easy by yourself, unless you have an Examiner unit.

Re: Service Indicator

as Stu said dealer only, if you've serviced the car yourself the light only comes up for a couple of seconds when starting.

could you put up with it rather than paying £50 odd for FIAT to reset it?

Re: Service Indicator

Many independents can reset the counter now. Key thing is to ALWAYS get the garage to agree to reset the counter when the service is done as that way they can hardly charge you extra afterwards.

Even main agents shouldn't charge more than 30 minutes labour ro reset it (in my area that's 32.50 + VAT).

Re: Service Indicator

Nationwide Autocentres has just cocked up. Their new software can't reset the service counter after all so they're taking my Stilo to the main agents to have it reset.

It certainly pays to part with the line "..and you will reset the service indicator when you've done the service?". "Certainly Sir!"

Hope my Stilo comes back in one piece.

Re: Service Indicator

The SERVICE DUE data is a value held in the body computer which counts down days or mileage until the time has come to trigger the warning. To reset the data held the correct information has to be sent down the CAN lines and a new value data input to the body computer.

This can only be carried out with Examiner (or very similar equipment, not normal diagnostic software) or by using CAN data creating software and inputting the correct raw data down the CAN lines to communicate with the body computer

Confusions happen because a lot of cars have a SERVICE or CHECK ENGINE warning light which triggers when a fault is recorded and is easy to extinguish using readily available diagnostic software. This is why you often get the "Yes we can put out your sevice light sir" followed later by the sheepish phone call "Errr sorry sir but ...."

To find out more about CAN systems and some light reading over breakfast look http://www.kvaser.com/can/protocol/index.htm

Probably better to keep them in ignorance then. The whole point, of course, is once they've said that then they pick up the tab for resetting it and not you (assuming you've already agreed the service cost)

I can't speak for them all but I'm genuinely impressed with the bunch next to me (literally only 3 minute walk away too).

I need the service book stamped for the 3rd party warranty

UPDATE: Just picked the motor up and counter has now been reset (don't know what that cost them). See, they can't be that bad can they Phil?

Re: Service Indicator

Actually the service info is stored in the instrument cluster, this has to accessed using examiner. When you change the cluster the old data needs to be drawn from the old cluster and programmed into the new one. The mileage is also stored in the engine ecu, but this is just for eobd diagnosis, and police enforcement.

Re: Service Indicator

Great, thanks for the clarification, that would explain why the donor car mileage is displayed if the instrument cluster is changed
