Been busy today.....

Well I have been busy today, with me taking the bumper off the car to sort out the headlamp motor on the passenger side. Along with this I changed all the bulb's for better quality ones from Phillips, and Osram. The main bulb's were from the Phillips White Light range which I got from Eurocarparts. The package includes a set of side lights with each set of main bulbs, which makes them great value. And for the fog lights I used Osram Yellow bulbs which I have used before. I find yellow fogs work a lot better with the main lights giving a greater viewing distance in foggy weather. The orange indicator lights also swapped for a set of Phillips Sliverline and have been used on the rears too.

I have found the colour of the lights to be very white and they have a great range at night. A very good upgrade and worth the effort.

While the bumper was off I fitted a Stebel compact air horn. I changed the position of the horn as per other posts on the forum. I mounted it to the side of the driver's side headlight.

Loud and incredibly clear is best described the noise from it. It would make an Italian taxi driver blush, it's that good.....

I will post some pics at some point soon, so keep an eye out.

I was going to fit a H7 HID kit but after a lot of thought I decided not too. The Phillips bulbs made the changes a good idea.

Anyway it's been a good day.

Re: Been busy today.....

I used the horn for a longer period yesterday and I think that I have blown fuse. I am happy to replace the 10 amp fuse with another, but would a 20 amp fuse be better? Or is this a bad idea?

I just want a quick fix for now, before I get the car to the auto electrician in a few weeks time.

I am running the power for the horn as an extension from the old wiring.

Re: Been busy today.....

I think the horn is a 20A fuse from memory.. but if 10A is too weedy, use a 15A and see how that goes. The new horn probably needs more juice than the standard Fiat one.

Re: Been busy today.....

The fuse has blown because there was an overload somewhere in the circuit.

It's never a good idea to fit a higher rating fuse without first finding out why the original one blew, and whether the existing wiring is suitable for the increased current.

Which Stebel horn have you fitted? What is it's current rating?

Re: Been busy today.....

The horn is a Stebel compact air horn and is rated at 18amp max load. On short bursts this worked with the 10amp fuse fine. Just when I went into Hulk mode with it, that when it went. I will replace like for like, test and replace with proper wiring later on.

The horn circuit is protected by fuse F10 (should be 15 Amp, not 10 Amp as you have), and relay T3 (20 Amp) in the engine compartment fuse box. The wiring from the fuse box to the horn and the horn to earth is specified at 1.5 mm˛, which is capable of carrying 21 Amps.

As your horn has a maximum load of 18 Amps and the cables are rated at 21 Amps, it should be safe just to fit a 20 Amp fuse, although possibly try the correct 15 Amp fuse first.

Surprised you say the fuse held when used on short bursts. As it's an air horn, it will have a compressor driven by an electric motor. Electric motors always need a higher current on initial start up than they do when running. I would have expected the fuse to blow on short bursts (continual start ups) rather than continual sustained use.

If you have the right wheel arch liner off, I would also be inclined to remove and clean the multi earth point connector (C11).

Re: Been busy today.....

So I got back from holiday and sorted out the horn problem. It was a blown fuse so I swapped it over for a 20amp one. The socket around the fuse was a crusty so I cleaned it with some WD40. A quick test and everything was fantastic.

Cheers for the information.

Re: Been busy today.....

Good stuff mate. Still need to order my bew horn... yours sounded fantastic... better than mine... mine was more of a train noise and turned into more a boat noise until it died... least of my worries now.

Cleaned up my old shocks today and refitted the factory springs on the rear... lots of cut knuckles and bruises... couldnt swear as the wee lad was playing table tennis in the garage... need to update my thread

Re: Been busy today.....

I have had one before, and it was very loud. There's a site based in Netherlands that has loads listed, and you can hear them too.....

Great updates and hope everything goes well 😀
