Service Due Countdown Timer: Broken after service

(Firstly - apologies for posting yet another query about resetting service intervals, but I've spent a merry half hour searching through the forum and I haven't found anything like this.)

I've just taken my 1.9JTD Stilo into a main Fiat dealer for a service (107,000miles.) When I went to pick it up, I noticed the service interval in the Menu was showing up as three flashing dashes (i.e. "---".) I told them, and they spent the next hour messing around with their box of tricks but finally admitted defeat - they couldn't get it to say "10,000miles til next service" or whatever it's supposed to be.

Here's the problem. They've offered to take the car in next week for an "independent examination" to identify what's wrong with it. They say that if they find a problem that they've caused, they'll sort it out, but otherwise it might require a new dashboard which is a big bill I'll have to foot.

This sounds like bullsh*t to me. Firstly, I don't believe they have the technical capability of identifying whether the computer is now playing up because of the work their technicians have done, or whether it's just a 'wear and tear' issue which they had no part in. (And I think it's highly unlikely that they're going to hold their hands up and admit it was their fault.) Secondly, as the car has a full Fiat service history and the service mileage indicator was working fine prior to this service, I think the most likely explanation is that they've done something wrong. I won't be happy if they tell me I have to foot an expensive repair bill.

I've got two questions for anyone who knows more about this stuff than me:

1. Have you heard of this problem with the service interval timer? Any solutions?

2. Any ideas on how I should play this with the Fiat dealer? (It's an oldish car, and I could just ignore it, but I feel there's a principle at stake - if they've mucked it up, they should either fix it or compensate me.)

I'm sure the service interval can only be reset a certain amount of times and its not very many, 10 may be, so you may have reached the limit.

As Shadey says, probably used up all the service tickets. Not sure whether the indicator should flash when they're all used though. I doubt a dealer has done 8, 9 or 10 (whichever it is) services on a Stilo so unlikely they would know either.

As shadey said I think you have run out of service coupons. I'm sure you can change the number of remaining service coupons using fiatecuscan.

Re: Service Due Countdown Timer: Broken after service

FiatECUScan(FES) is able to reset the service Interval, I used it on my own car when I did the last service. I'm sure FES tells you that there is a limit to how many can be done and not to mess around with it.

A car with a full service history, sometime more than 1 a year due to mileage, may well use up all its resets by the time its 6 or 7 years old.

Re: Service Due Countdown Timer: Broken after service

I've got to hand it to you - you boys know your stuff!

Having read all your replies, I've done a little digging around and found the following update notes about one of the releases of FiatECUScan:

"- Added Service coupons function for Stilo to set the number of remaining service coupons"

So it sounds like you're right - the Stilo computer only has a set number of service coupons programmed into it. I've checked my logbook, and today's service was number 10. So I'd say that explains it. I shall get a post-it note, write down the mileage for my next service and stick it inside the pocket on my sunshade...

It's a bit of a laugh that the Fiat technician and his boss spent an hour on a Friday evening trying to sort this out. They were at it til gone 6pm! They'll be phoning me up next week to arrange me bringing the car in for diagnosis - can't wait to explain how Fiats work to them...

Thanks chaps.

When you mention FES, you'll probably get some waffle about any use of unauthorised software will invalidate your service warranty, or similar rubbish...
