Our Stilo has done another 20,000 miles so I decided to treat her to a service.

New oil filter, original Fiat.
New engine oil, Castol Edge.
New gearbox oil, Castrol TAF-X.
New fuel filter, Mann WK854/5.
New air filter, original Fiat.
New pollen filter, original Fiat.
New white dials, Lockwood.
New Stebel Nautilus horn, extremely loud.

The new fuel filter is bigger and advised for use with Bio-Diesel which we use 99% of the time. Looked into buying a Mann filter after richydraper recomended them, excellent spec so I took his advice.

Do you change your oil every 20000 miles? I suspect you mean some more extensive service including gearbox oil...

I change oil and filter every 6 month or every 10.000 km whatever comes first. 6 months have come first every time so far...

I just changed my gearbox oil aswell (few days ago), to Valvoline 75W80, but that's to come every 5th year or 100.000 km.

The engine oil is replaced every 12 months as part of a normal servicing routine.

This time I decided to do it earlier than normal due to clocking up 20,000 miles.

Might just be wishfull thinking but the engine seems quieter and pulls better at low revs. Can engine oil actually make that sort of difference to a car?

Definitely, I noticed a clear difference in the engine sound when I switched to Mobil 1 0W40. Before that I had Mobil 1 5W50 and the valves were clattering quite loudly, I was even afraid that there is something wrong with it because of the LPG and after ~5000 km switched to Mobil 1 New Life 0W40 and I have never heard the engine so quiet, no valve clatter. Even when cold I could previously hear the hydraulic lifters for ~10 seconds and now I don’t hear them at all. So using an oil meeting FIAT 9.55535 - M2/N2/Z2 specifications really makes all the difference J

You mean you drove on the same oil for 20000 miles? That’s like… 32000kms isn’t this way too much? My maintenance is surely an overkill J I never let it pass the 8000km markJ

The oil is changed every year when its serviced and the car normally does about 12,000 miles a year.

However, we've doubled that since September last year when we brought the car so I decided to service the car earlier than I normally would.

I would guess most cars do about 20,000 miles a year and only have their oil changed when serviced once a year, so I'd say 20,000 miles on the same oil is normal ...

Ofcourse I have void my guarantee many years ago, but checking the service schedule for my Stilo right now, I have to change oil every 10.000 km (6.000 miles), if I was to claim anything from Fiat.

Mobil says: Oil Change Interval: Oil change intervals can be as short as 3,000 miles or as long 15,000 miles on some new cars.

20000 miles or >30000kms is way way to much. Is everybody driving on the same oil for ~20000 miles in the UK? I am really surprised... Does the book on the JTD really say 12 months regardless of the milage?

As Morty has already said the Stilo service manual recommends changing the oil every 6,000 miles but most people only service their car once a year so the oil is only changed once a year. While this is not what the manufactures recommend it does seem to be a "normal" thing to do.

I would never change the oil more often than once a year if I wasn't a petrolhead. :D

Several years ago the annual average was 12,000, but this has been falling consistently over recent years, and is now reckoned to be 10,000 at most.

An RAC study in 2009 found that nearly half of cars travel less than 5,000 a year and only 10% more than 15,000.

Out of interest, I have an early container of Mobil 1 in my garage which carries the following claim (long since removed from later packs):

'Provides protection reserves of 25,000 miles or 1 year'

How much did all the service parts cost?

New oil filter, original Fiat - £10
New engine oil, Castol Edge - £40
New gearbox oil, Castrol TAF-X - £25
New fuel filter, Mann WK854/5 - £15
New air filter, original Fiat - £10
New pollen filter, original Fiat - £10
New white dials, Lockwood - £20
New Stebel Nautilus horn, extremely loud - £30

Total - £160

I'm hoping I'll get time later this week to fit it. The missus's sister has white dials in her car, so she wants them in our car. Personally I think the original black dials fine.
Really don't get it ... how are these cooler?

It all depend a A) where you live and B) type of car.

Smaller cars like Pandas etc will always normally do lower mileage than large cars like Stilos etc as its normally the bigger more comfortable car people opt for the longer journeys.

Equally I can understand a London car doing only 4k a year, but a car based in the country side, east Anglia, Wales etc I'd expect to do 10-18k a year depending upon the owner.
