how long should this simple job take on the 2.4?

Right, Looking at this do I actually have to take the battery cover off, disconnect and remove battery, remove the battery tray and disconnect the silly amount or electronics to then some how get to the air filter?

Seems...... poorly designed? Unless im doing it wrong!

i tried exactly the same thing the other day! it looks a bloody nightmare!! ......oh, i'm off to italy in the summer, i might well go to turin one day and track down the 2.4 engine designer and ask him "have u ever changed and oil filter on one of your engines before?"....... and then tell him he's an arse!

I agree. But the OP was actually asking about the AIR filter...

I got mine done at a garage so much easier when the cars up in the air :p

But i was underneath the car with the mechanic telling him how to do it. Get yourself a pair of circlip pliers or go out and by yourself a jubille clip before hand. Take off the pipe directly below the airbox (front left) as its in the way its got 1 of those weird fiat clips. Then you just take off the two clips on the side of the airbox its on a hinge that will swing down just enough for you to take the old 1 out and fit the new 1. My mechanic didnt have circlip plier and sprung it off with a screw driver and managed with great difficulty to put it back on with pointy nose pliers would be easy with circlip pliers tho. I fitted a k&n in mine didnt really notice much difference but why not :p

Ah, so underneath is the better option?

Why didn't I think of that, it would reason its perfectly logical to have to jack the car up in the air to get to a service item! :)

Joking aside, thanks for the tip, ill get it up on the ramps tomorrow as I need to do some investigating any how.

Any idear on the cost of a set of wishbones for one of these? I have been reliably informed the ball joint is shot (although I get no knocking or funny steering)

Hi,

Wishbones will set you back about £35 a side. I got mine from ebay

cheers for now

There is absolutely no need to disconnect the pipework. If you just inclip the 'lid' to the air box, there is just enough room to hinge the lid back sufficiently to remove and replace the filter.

wish mine where the cheapest i found one wishbone is £160 fiat want £211 not sure if i can fir the abarth one to the shumi was led to believe the camber angle different.

and for the air filter its so much easyier underneath as it was quoted before just undertray off and alittle tight but easyier..

the whole car a nightmare to work on so much different to military kit lol

Thanks all, I had a look under it this morning and it looks by far the easiest option to do it from the underside.
Ill have a crack at it next weekend when I do the oil and filter....next investment = 2 post ramp!

The wishbones are a pain, why is there not a simple rebuild kit available? There is nothing wrong with the arm, just the ball joint and bushes which could be easily pressed in and out

Hi again,

the wishbones are an easy job to do, i did mine in about 35 minutes a side.
You can buy replacement bushes but if the ball joint has gone then the only option is a whole new unit.

Cheers for now

I think you'll find its completely impossible to put the words "simple job" and "2.4 engine" into any meaningful sentence!:D

I don't know, the cam belts easer to do than on the 155 bravo and the 20vt coupe as there is more space. The sacrifice here is the complete lack of space on the passengers side now.
The car is growing on me slowly, its not quite as hardcore as the bravo hgt, its like its gone a little old and soft

I bought 1 of the chains didn't get to use it tho coz I couldn't get the sump plug off :p. But gonna give it a go next year. It looks like a crude tool but it's probably the best thing to use as it connects to your socket set allowing you to apply the required force.

I hope it works for you. It didn't for me, because there's not enough room to the left of the filter for the socket wrench.

Strap wrench with long handle was the only thing I could make work...

I might just get the garage to do it again then :p 25 quid for oil and filters ain't bad.

And I agree - the oil filter is an absolute bummer. I've yet to find a filter removal tool that really works easily. What do you use?

in the end i used a pair of filter grips, i like to do oil changes while its hot - the oil flows out better - its trying to spin it off with your hand without burning it on the manifold thats the really tricky bit, my right hand ended up looking like freddy kurgers face by the time the new one was fitted.(n)
