General performance chips???

General performance chips???

You don't say whether petrol or diesel. Generally you will get better performance with a bespoke re-map rather than a bolt-on 'chip' that just fools the ECU into pumping more fuel into the engine...

hi looking to purchase performance chip loads on ebay looking for recommendations ??? thanks keith

I hope you don't mean the resistor "chips" , they're just simple 10p resistors which are connected instead of the inlet air temperature sensor and simulate a lower air temperature - the ecu will make the air-fuel mixture richer but your lambda sensor will correct this again, waisted money in my opinion!

Yeh, there great.

You obviosly took time to check out the site I linked to.

am I right in thinking these resistor chips youre on about would have to be connected to the maf sensor cable whereas these digital tuning boxes connect to the common rail.

the resistor is connected instead of the intake air temperature sensor (not the airflow sensor) - this way the ecu thinks it's cold outside and adds some more fuel to correct for air density/temperature.
The self-learning of the ecu will (partly) correct the richer mixture again by adapting the fuel injection timing.
A digital tuning box alters the signal towards the ecu actively depending on the incoming parameters - compared to the simple fixed resistor this is a better way to gain power however there are great differences between the various existing types....

I think I would understand better if I knew where the intake air temperature sensor is on a JTD can anyone enlighten me.

The engine needs both fuel and air to work.

As the name says, it's a sensor present on all modern cars actually that measures the density of the air and corrects the mixture of fuel/air etc accordingly.

I remember on my old Dacia whenever it was really hot outside I would always feel that the engine doesn't work as good. So that's what it's for.

Why is eveyone talking about attaching resistors to things?

Those ripoff resisitor boxes were on ebay years ago, no one sells or uses them anymore.

The Tuning boxes you buy today are nothing like them, for starters there is no resistor, they're all digital.

Nearly all of them are adjustable to suit your needs. Mines great, I'm able to increase and decrease its power gains when ever I want. Best £90 I ever spent?

So it would make it very difficult to attach a resistor type of chip into the plug like they do and still have the plug connected to the maf sensor
I'm not really certain but I don't think such a device has ever been sold for the JTD. The common 'trick' on the JTD is to increase fuel rail pressure which is the box Shadeyman keeps going on about.

Quite effective, I gather, but difficult to see how it can ever lead to improved mpg and as Yellow Peril summed up in post #2 not exactly in the same league as a remap (but then it's a lot cheaper)

Keith,

did you get your tuning box in the end. If so what do you reckon to it. I can recommend the ItalianSpeed box if you are still looking.

hi ratty spooky iv only just purchased tuning box just after xmas and b4 i read this last post and guesswhat its the italian one iv purchased due to get it 4/1/2011 did u feel any diff in mpg/power thanks keith

mpg went up a little but the change in power is fantastic. You will need to adjust the box a few times to set it up but once you have done it you can leave it. i found i could run the box at maximum but it didn't make that much difference to 75% so wound it down to around 3/4 of the way round.

Any problems with the instructions just ask and i will help out. I found that where it said extract it means slide out sideways.
