Well, as the title says I was undecided about having a re-map or a tuning box.

After speaking to Keith over at Diesel Express he convinced me to give it a try with a fall 30 day money back guarantee.

Just been adjusting it and trying it out and I must say I'm pleased with the results.

I'm sure I could knock it up another notch or two but number 4, the center setting feels good so there it will stay.

Not sure if anyone else on here has given them a try but they get my thumbs up.. (y)

£89 fitted, took me less than 10 min.

Hi Stu,

Cheers for the heads up, where exactly do they go ie what do you unplug to plug them in so to speak.
What sort of effect do you think it will have on mpg will it be better? Only ask as i,m all for doing better mpg!
My only worry with these remaps/ tuning boxes etc id if you had an unfortunate with the car would your insurance company just turn and walk away?

Cheers for now ]

Hi,
Yes i know there is the keeping quiet bit but what if you are pulled at the roadside?
Vosa for example are hot on the trail of people who have had remaps etc as their vehicle may be in the wrong band of tax due to the remap ?????????????
Vosa do carry out spot checks on diesel cars to make sure you are not running around on red.
I just wonder how much your insurance would be "loaded" if you were to declare one of these thing had fitted to your car.

Cheers

Hi Dave,
Cheers for that.
Well i,m an old git (41) with full no claims so might give them a call just to see what they say.
You never know they may say "yeah thanks for telling us but there wont be any increaase in your premium"...............................not!:p

cheers

Hi Kev.

Firstly VOSA would find it next to impossible to detect a re-map at the road side.
Not so difficult with a tuning box though, they only have to lift the hood.
Play it safe and inform your insurance company. (y)

This is how a Tuning Box was explained to me cuz I'm a bit dum. ;)

It connects in series between your ECU and your Common Rail pressure sensor. It Digitally talks to your ECU basically telling it that the presure is slightly lower than it really is. The ECU then slightly increases the presure there by increasing the flow of fuel into the engine.

More fuel = more power.

I haven't tried it in 1st and 2nd gear but when I put my foot to the floor in 3rd and 4th I could really feel the difference. So much so that I backed off, road conditions are a bit wet this evening.

I'm really impressed with it. :D

Purchased a 2005 Stilo JTD Multiwagon last week and compared to our 2002 Stilo JTD that has a remap the Multiwagon was slow. With my hand on my heart I can honestly say the Multiwagon now feels quicker than our old Stilo. (y)

I can't believe the difference for £90.

Is this a 'proper' tuning box that basically reprograms the ecu until it's removed or does it just overfuel the car like those dodgy resistor things on ebay. It's a good price and I'd definitely be tempted if it's a proper one.

Are there any petrol versions of ECU Chip tuning boxes available anywhere? And if so, will it boost up the engine considerably or just gain 6-7 hp out the maximum output?

I heard that you can't really tune petrol engines because they don't have a turbo and there are considerably less parameters that can be mapped by the new control unit. Is that so?

I have a 1.8 petrol with a standard 133 hp engine.

A turbo is just much more straight foward to tune. Best starting point for a decent petrol is an induction kit and a half decent exhaust then you would get a little more benifit from a remap. Block work is next for NASP engines and I'm way out of my league from there :D.

Well then I guess diesel engine are much more easier to tune. A decent exhaust would take me as far as 1000 E in Romania, a tuned induction kit would go up to 500 E, and so on. Really amazed on how you guys manage to tune engines with so little money.

[OFF] Really thinking about moving to London myself, but then again, I wouldn't want to twist anyone's mind, I know the general thought that goes around about Romanians, sad thing is most of it is true, they cause a problem in our country as well. The prices and lifestyle over there are incomparable.

I recently spent a month in Romania and 2 weeks last year. Didn't have to buy any car parts but the prices for everything else was much cheaper there than in the UK.

1k for an exhaust? Thats crazy . Based on what friends have had done I'm hoping to get my system done before christmas and budgeting 3-£400 for it. Sadly like you said getting big power gains from a petrol is next to impossible without massive work. (would love to see what a custom turbo being built would cost you, haha!)

Taxes are much higher on everything. Basic salary is 100E, medium is 350. I make around 600 and for my 24 years of age, this is very good.

Although I am making more than 70% of whole Romania, do you still think everything is cheaper? :)

Sure, on paper, but take insurance for example. I've recently just got back from London and a good friend bought a 2009 Fiat Bravo, full insurance on it is 380£ per year, or so he said. The car is estimated at 13000£. I pay 520£ per year for my full insurance, car is estimated at 4200£.

See the difference? :)

Dealers are the same though. From what I read, they have the same prices as in UK, same services as well. So tuning a car in Romania, with my money, at 1500£ is like tuning your car for 7500. :)

Yeah, I take your point. When you take local salaries into the equation it is more expensive.

Guess I was just thinking about it as a tourist, with diesel at 4.40 Lei (£0.88), a month's road tax for 30 Lei (£6), restaurant meal for 4 in Mamaia Constanta for 320 Lei (£64), a hotel room in Bucharest for 160 Lei (£32) and cigarettes at 9 Lei (£1.90).

Hi,

Well i phoned my insurance and "computer says no" !! They said it wasnt an approved my modification to fit a digital tuning box and as such if i fitted one it would invalidate my insurance. Oh well never mind !

Cheers
