Ever since we have had our Stilo (first reg feb 2002) we have had an annoying noise from the rear when going round left hand corners on bumpy roads.

Dealer originally thought it was a loose brake caliper and then recently agreed this was not the problem and spent some time with the car trying to establish the problem.

It is now having a new rear subframe fitted !!

If anyone else has this problem there is apparantly a service b ulletin about it

Yes, according to Fiat (at least, a while ago) the subframe was only a construction problem on the first series of 1.6 models.
But a lot of owner of other types (mostly Abarth) have this problem to, those where made march-july 2002, so could are generally considerd second series. Of course min creaks too, I have mentioned it to the dealer, so far, not fixed. Some people have had (mostly temporary) fixes by greasing the rubbers.

Hi

I've got the same problem with my Stilo 1.6. It's noticably worse when people are sat in the back.

After speaking to my local dealer, he says that they've checked the rear subframe for "play", which mine has none. He said that, if there is no improvement over the next few weeks, they'll fit a new subframe and bushes.

Watch this space!

Recently had a MW as a courtesy car, that was a much tighter drive than my Abarth. I just thought that was because of the increased wheelbase/length/weight of the car. Maybe it is because of a proper suspension being fitted nowadays.

I took my 1.6 dynamic 5dr into my local dealer today because of squeaking and a bit of rumbling from the rear suspension. I called Fiat head office and spoke to somebody adout the subframe problem. He said if the dealer doesn't know about a technical bulletin regarding the subframe, get them to call the head office. But they should all know about it. Well my dealer knew all about it thankfully and the part is on order. I'm interested to see the result of the work. Not only the noise, but I think the car sometimes feels a bit wayward when cornering. When I first got the car i was impressed by the way it cornered considering how tall it is.

Can anyone tell me how long does it take to replace the rear subframe? thanks

Stilo Multi wagon Rear Suspension bushes

I ahve just been informed by a garage( that I trust) that the rear suspension bushes on my 03 multiwagon have collapsed and that I face a repair bill of £1000, full replacement 'no push' in bushes. In talking to the dealer ( who I dont trust) they are surprised that on a car with a milage 35K this has happened and are trying to 'do us a deal' to keep our business. Has anyone else encountered this?

Re: Stilo Multi wagon Rear Suspension bushes

Quite a few interesting threads on this Forum if you'd care to search for them.

Apparently, you now can replace the bush alone (instead of complete rear axle) which should make the job substantially less painful :)

Re: Stilo Multi wagon Rear Suspension bushes

Yes Argo is correct this is apparently a recent development from Fiat so check this out before parting with your hard earned cash and if you cant get the bushes consider a second hand axle from a later model bushes are around the £20 mark on the later models (y)

Thanks for your input, seems like i'm not the only person who has had this problem........hopefully we can get it sorted without too big a dent in the wallet.

Merry Christmas:)

Re: Rear Subframe

Thats correct but later models had the modified rear axle anyway and as you say the bushes are around the £25 mark ..now for the early models we understand that these also are availabe now and can be fitted instead of a complete replacement of the rear beam (y)

Re: Rear Subframe

But they are for a Punto??

Yes they were specifically manufactured for the common problem of knocking on the Punto series. Basically they cup around the old, worn, bushes to compress the whole thing together and irradicate the noise. I hope this helps. Jason.

P.S if this doesn't help and the knocking continues it is most likely it is your rear radius arms (another common problem with Puntos). There is also a repair kit on the market to solve this and they are around £25 each to do one arm.

Rear Axle, Bushes - A BIG Thanks!

I just wanted to write a few lines(!) to thank everyone who has posted comments with regards to the rear axle bushes.
This is my experience - I hope this helps!
I started to hear the clunk/bang/thud every pothole & drain cover I crossed in my 53 plate Stilo MultiWagon (near-side-rear). After worrying that I might be mistaken for a drunk driver  - avoiding potholes etc - I took it to a local Fiat Dealer. A young chap (just outta nappies) rode shotgun while I fought my instincts and actually aimed for the buggers.
He confirmed the rear bushes were "shot". After a 20p cuppa-"soup?":yuck: he informed that the whole axle needed replacing at a cost of "around a grand".:(
Three months outside of the warranty. Shheesshh!
Then I found you guys! (via Google!):D
I did get a second opinion with the St Erth FIAT DEALER(n) , explaining my research & other peoples experiences, but the chap there used innuendo to suggest that the fiat forum was full of people who didn't know as much as he did because he'd been with Fiat a very long time and knew all there was to know about Fiat's, life & everything.... and if I kissed ass - he MIGHT replace the axles with bushes at a good price.:bang:
A chat with Fiat Customer Care (00800 3428 0000), explaining that I had learned (from here) that apparently the bushes are available without an axle earned me a letter saying sorry....but...tough...wear...tear...etc...Etc.
Another phone call to Fiat to confirm I wasn't looking to get something for nothing, but paying a £1000 for a wear and tear item seemed excessive considering there seemed to be an alternative Part # G0050706505 - Costing £12.68 ea + VAT.
Jeff @ Fiat Customer Care said he'd phone me back. That day he did and said the part did exist and that the original dealers would contact me.
Keith at Vosper’s Fiat phoned, and said he would order the parts but was unsure how much it would cost - but did suggest that axle changing takes a few hours so gave me a ball park figure of £300 inc.
2 weeks later my Stilo MW spent a day with Vospers Fiat, they replaced the bushes, my car sounds healthier, handles brilliantly and I worry no-more about the old bill thinking I'm a drunk driver!
Total cost £317.44 FANTASTIC!:slayer:

SINCERE THANKS GUYS(y) :worship:

Well I hope the chap from St Erth's knows a bit more about Fiats now! Perhaps we should send him an invite to join the forum, you never know what he might learn:)

It would seem obvious that of all the hundreds of Stilo owners here just about all the faults there are will turn up right here, along with the solutions. Also we can see trends of which year or model has specific problems or an across the board fault like the spring issue

It would be foolish of Fiat not to look in here to see what's going on with their products once they leave the factory and if I was a Fiat tech I'd be browsing here all the time. After all, a Fiat tech who knows his stuff is very impressive,
"Thanks very much! Look after my baby. Here's my money you wonderful person".
One that doesn't know as much as the owner looks very foolish
"Err! Think I'll go somewhere else"
