Re: Door problem something snapped?

Lol... it's a Fiat. Look at how hard it is to change a headlight bulb and then tell me you're suprised :D

I know yeah! I was just hoping and praying it would be a quick fix. I don't like the snap sound every time i close the door so i might just remove the check strap completely??? Unless anyone else thinks this is bad...

Yes. It is bad. You can easily bend the door hinges/mountings without it and then the door wont fit properly. Better to fix it.

Re: Door problem something snapped?

Mine used to click, so I just opened up the door as wide as it could go, and tightened up all the fastenings; didn't click after that.

Re: Door problem something snapped?

I'm usually very careful with my door, just the wind blew it wide open. Looks like another niggly job for the stilo.

Re: Door problem something snapped?

yep defo the check strap, had them both replaced on mine, fiat know about this problem too,and changed the design, and yeah, cos the strap goes inside the door time door panel has to come off, only took my garage 10mins to replace.

Re: Door problem something snapped?

I'd rather not book it in with fiat to get it repaired. I'm gonna leave it for the time being. Need to save as much money as possible coz i'm going on holiday! After that, gonna fix her door strap, maybe replace both (depending on how i get on with the first one!), replace my pioneer dep9800bt with the double din sony XAV W1, and more importantly, replace the headlight leveller that i ordered and received a month ago! What fun when i get back from my holiday... :)

Stilo door strap.

Mrs. Beard opened the door of her 3-dr. Stilo last night and heard a loud crack. At first she thought someone had thrown something at the car, but when she tried to close the door it wouldn't. As it was dark and the battery of her mobile was flat she decided she couldn't leave it where it was as she was on a main road in a dodgy area. She decided to drive slowly home holding the door shut with one hand. She kept the door pulled-to with her right hand and steered with the left.

She said that her main frustration was that as she was holding onto the door with her right hand, changing gear with her left and steering with her right knee and chin, she was unable to stick the "Vs" up at people who were tooting at her for driving at 20. She also said she started laughing when the thought of getting cramp at that point.

Anyway, back on topic, when she got home and I had a look at it, the retaining strap had sheared off. The AA came and took the offending broken part off as it was secured by torx bolts. The question now is, where's the best place to get one of these, apart from a FIAT dealer and is it easy to fit to the door?

Re: Stilo door strap.

Re: Stilo door strap.

I'm afraid I've never searched for anything on here before so am a bit of a noob in that respect. Any pointers to how I go about it?

Re: Stilo door strap.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I keep getting a Google message saying
"Oops this link appears broken."

I'm going to have to buy a torx driver to fit it to the A post, but I'm wondering how it fits to the door. I know it fits with Allen bolts, but is it a case of just unbolting it, or does the door casing have to come off with all the messing about that entails?

Can you believe it. Back in December '07, some prat calling himself The Beard
posted here about loose bolts on his Wife's Stilo. In the end, the bits that needed tightening were the Allen bolts not the Torx bolts. Oddly they were on
the passenger's side. The driver's side hasn't made a sound which makes me believe that it didn't..... "just break".....as I'd been told, but was probably let go in the wind.

Re: Door check bar

Done this on the 3dr, as they were modded in 04/05 for a more smooth, solid door close.

eLEARN is bull for this - you don't need to take the glass out, or touch the BC wiring at all.

Easy method:
1. Open the door.
2. Remove the door card.
3. Remove the speaker.
4. With the door half closed, remove the two bolts securing the check-strap to the body.
5. Remove the two bolts keeping it secured to the door.
6. Remove the check strap, removing the seal half way through pulling the strap into the door.

Refit is reverse of remocal.
It really is easy, promise :D. Took me 30 mins or less per door.

For the benefit of anyone replacing a door check strap, Rich's guide (above) is spot on. In fact it's easier still, because there's no need even to completely remove the door card. You can ease the card away from the base of the door enough to remove the speaker and access the check strap mechanism. Saves the need to disconnect the puddle lights, alarm light and lock pop-up button.

And yes, the replacement check strap is plastic-coated and makes opening and closing the door much smoother.
