The cable on my drivers door snapped(n) Got the internal door panel off only to discover another panel (steel) bolted on. Undid all the bolts but could not remove it. Went to local Fiat dealer and friendly mechanic told me the window had to come out before the panel would come off. Also told me that you cannot just replace the cable, you have to buy a complete winder mechanism, called a regulator (£50). The mechanism is pop riveted on to the steel panel, so must be drilled out, 4 rivets, new assembly fitted and riveted on, window slid back in, all bolted up and finished. Total time 2hrs!:) No special tools required!

Removing the glass is very easy, on the steel panel there are two rubber caps. With these caps removed and the window pushed or wound down you can see the clips that retain the window through the holes that the rubber caps cover. The clips are plastic affairs that only need pushing back to undo the lock tabs that go through locating holes in the glass. The whole window then lifts out from the top of the door very easily. To remove the steel panel you must also remove the door lock mechanism, but if you have someone to assist, you can drill the rivets out, get assistant to hold panel, remove old window mechanism, slide in new mechanism, rivet on and re-assemble. This is how I did it as I didn't fancy removing the whole lock assembly, you do have to undo the 3 screws securing the lock assembly to allow some movement for access.

Wow, doesn't look good having to remove the glass to get that metal panel off. It needs to come off so I can fit the new door check bar.

Don't have to remove the inner (steel) panel for a door checkstrap. Just remove the speaker assembly (after taking the main door panel off) and reach up through the hole. (y)
