Ok I posted a thread a while back about the fact the car was flat and chugging black smoke out when driving.

I had the car serviced and all seemed well (filters I would of said).

Now this is an on going issue as such that the car especailly when cold doesnt want to pick up the revs and seems to have a lot of throttle travel without actually raising the revs ( i am aware its a fly by wire throttle), what does happen during this part of the throttle travel though is a plume of smoke bellows out the back until it would seem the turbo spins up and lifts the revs.

Once up and over say 2000rpm the car seems nice and happy to rev. If over that rev you floor the throttle to over take or something then again lots of smoke puffs out the back ( a thick dump of black smoke).... is this sounding like a turbo issue to any one yet?

Now fuel use seems ok.. im getting about 43-44mpg with normal driving.. is this normal.. im sure I used to see 50 out of the old car.

The car starts well does seem to take a while to warm up but havent really been concerned about that, its just this lazy pick up and smoking that is starting to worry me when I thought the service and filter change would of cured the issue.

HELP...

Ive put a little bit of praise on another thread about how much I like this car but dont like driving arounf looking in my mirror wondering why all the cars behind need there lights on in the middle of the day when following me.

I drive a Ulysse 2.2JTD, and get that to smoke nicely as well, especially if it hasn't been driven properly for a few days.

Does this happen ALL the time?

Sounds a bit boost valve related to me although that would normally throw the engine warning light. All the same might be worth checking the tubing and everything else is in good order (plenty of threads on this).

I'd also be inclined to stick to the better quality fuels (such as BP Ultimate) :)

This is a constant issue yes.. the car is smoky even when warmed up but from cold the revs seem particularly resistant to picking up from idle to about 2000rpm.. i guess thats where the turbo is spinning well.

The smoking and when I say smoking this is a dense black cloud that hangs in the air and even leaves a black line on the road if going slowly. This is everytime you pull away from idle and also when cruising and then use lots of throttle to build speed.

I'd start investigating the EGR valve first.

I've just been reading a couple of polder threads about the EGR, seems a guy had similar symtoms but with out the smoke... Im off work tomorrow so may have a look (im not very good on cars other than polishing them).

If I cant get at the valve I will be getting a garage to look at it.... am I correct in thinking that it can be removed easily and cleaned some how?

Not easy enough plus how can you test it as its electromechanical, the PWM signal might be getting to the valve but the mechanical plunger might be knackered.
Considering its cost £75 re-con its probably easier to renew insteard of cleaning & refitting, after it has been diagnosed which is best done by examiner.

Can the EGR break down over a short space of time or would during the major service somethung like this get checked / noticed when on examiner oir even visually by the mecahnics?

Ive spoken with a few local garages, and ive had a firm quote of 140+vat for the egr valve and 80 quid fitting!
One specialist fiat garage told me to contact a diesel specialist.. ~~I didnt get chance to speak with the right person there as it was lunch time when I rang.
I think I will get it in to the dealer I had it serviced and get them to do a proper diagnostic rather than guessing as there seems to be a few ideas of what it could be cbeen suggested.
What I do know is the car is really poor to drive at the minute and is a touch embarrasing chucking the amount of smoke out the back pulling out of junctions and away from lights.

phoned the garage up again today to say that the EGR was about 79+ vat... 5 mins of holding later I was quoted £149+ vat fitted.

So the cars booked for week on Wednesday to be fitted.... fingers crossed it will be the remedy.

Rear suspension bushes are then next on the list as felt terrible with 5 people in yesterday on some bumpy roads.

sorry for the thread hijack but thought this didn't warrant a new thread.

With regards to my earlier post my car does smoke quite a bit now under hard acceleration, which I think is due to the remap.

The thing is I'm a bit concerned when it comes round to my MOT, do diesels actually have an emissions test or is it just a smoke thickness test? if so can a garage just do a test for me (before it comes round to the MOT) to find out if it would pass or not?

Thanks

Im slightly worried about this as well... the car is in for its yearly governmental interrogation on Wednesday (seems like every damn week I am having something or other happening with my car).

If you only drive around town then it's a good idea to give the JTD a good blast before dropping off for it's MOT but otherwise I don't think there's too much to worry about. The whole ECU setup is highly geared to keeping emissions down :)

I do lots of town driving with mine and it still pretty much sails through (y)
