Fiat Stilo JTD Cambelt Change

Some pics of my recent cambelt change hope they help.

Rought order of process.

- remove covers
- disconnect battery
- remove washer bottle
- move coolant bottle
- remove ecu
- remove one glow plug to aid engine turning over
- remove aux belt by removing bottom wheel with the 4 torx bolts in lots of tension in this so be carefull.
- remove timing belt cover
- line up timing marks
- slacken tensioner
- remove timing belt
- fit new belt adjust tensioner
- turn engine recheck tensioner
- refit all other components

took about five hours not done one of these before was awkward to remove the aux belt and setting up new tensioner is a pain. removing glow plug was pain too probably if you can turn engine over with out removing one try that instead as mine were seized in pretty solid and are a pain to access.

timing belt kit cost 125 from desira including new tensioner and roller. aux belt was 16 from local motor factors.

Go for it i got cheesed off trying to upload the pics to the fiat forum site so gave up and used photobucket, fiat forum only lets you upload 5 pics at a time and by the time you write some text the system has lost the pics, guides thing sucks, be much easier just to write a normal post

Diesel pump doesn't need timing.

Re: Fiat Stilo JTD Cambelt Change

The engine mounted fuel pump is just a very high pressure pump. It has no distribution role so it doesn't need to be timed.

Injector opening is controlled by the engine management ECU which sends a PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) signal to the injectors.

All passenger car diesel engines sold in Europe have used this method for many years.

Re: Fiat Stilo JTD Cambelt Change

It's more commonly called a common rail diesel.

Re: Fiat Stilo JTD Cambelt Change

I have done a few JTD timing belts and they are relatively easy (a lot easier than an Alfa twinspark or even the 1.2/1.4 16V petrol). The Alfaworkshop guide is useful (same engine):

http://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/alfa_jtd_cambelt.shtml

I never bother taking a heater plug out. Taking one out only stops one of the four cylinders from going to compression.

Re: Fiat Stilo JTD Cambelt Change

Just a quick note about the idler pulley. There is an earlier and later type pulley fitted on 1.9 jtd 8v Stilos up to engine number 3646771 (fitted 15/05/2003) If you have an earlier Stilo you may need to make sure the timing belt kit you buy has the correct parts. I dont think they supply the earlier pulley any more, you get given the later type but you will need a different bolt and washer to fit it.

More details can be found on this thread:
