Being fairly handy with spanners etc, I often find myself tinkering away under the bonnet and referring to the Bible (Haynes manual not Jesus and Co) the only problem I have with Haynes is that it doesn't tell you what tools you require before you start a job.

So the purpose of this thread is for anyone with knowledge to name a part and the specific tool/toolsize needed to remove/adjust it.

Hopefully after a bit of input it could be tidied and made a sticky.

I'll start by doing the most common one

Wheel nuts - 19mm Socket

and

Alloy locating pin/spacer nut - 12mm spanner

Anyone else?

the sump plug is definetly 12mm on a sei sporting. i no this because i did the oil change 2 days ago. i used a drain plug adaptor which i got from halfords for £3 or somthing. i basically fits on any 3/8th drive ratchit or tbar and fits snugly into the plug.

mm, i cant think of any other tool sizes at the mo

Rear Hub Nut - 30mm Socket/Torque Wrench/210Nm
Front Hub Nut - 30 Socket/Torque Wrench/240Nm

Rear Radius Arms/Front Suspension Nuts + Bolts - 19mm Nut/Socket/Spanner

Seat Belt Bolts - 17mm Socket/Spanner

Rear Seat Bolts - 13mm Spanner/Socket

Arch Liner Bolts - 8mm Socket/Spanner

Track Rod End Ball Joint Nut - 17mm Socket/Spanner - Ball Joint Splitter as well

Lower Wishbone Ball Joint Nut - 17mm Socket/Spanner - Ball Joint Splitter as well

Cailper Bolts - 17mm Socket/Spanner

Bleed Nipples - 8mm Spanner/Socket (I found a ring spanner was better)

Hi,
This is going to create a very scattered approach to finding out what tools are required for what job, wouldn't it be easier if the tools were listed on a job basis....such as what tools are needed to change front brake pads:

19mm wheel brace
4mm punch or small screwdriver
pliers
large flat head screwdriver
file
wire brush
hammer

Thanks

Agreed (y)

Head Bolts 13mm Hex or 1/2" (If head of bolt is buggered - but dont expect if back!!)

Gearbox drain plug 8mm hex drive, allen key recommended as is difficult to access with a key type drive!

Adjusting handbrake cable, 19mm + 14mm spanner, also small tube of grease for threads afterwards.

My handbrake is two 13mm spanners.

Erm, tightening alternator belt, 8mm spanner or socket to get arch liner off, then 16mm or 5/8 auld fashioned spanner to loosen mounts and big metal bar to push the alternator back and re-tighten, make sure the belt can still be twisted slightly in the middle or it will snap.

Removing front Seats - 6mm allen key
Rear seat squab 13mm socket
Rear seat backrest 10 or 11mm socket (can't remeber which  )

Engine to gearbox bolts 19mm socket
Gearbox linkage ball joints - flat bladed screw driver with at least a 7mm blade, fine nosed pliers (strong), plumbers wrench

Front strut to body nuts 13mm socket
Strut to top mount nut 17mm socket and 18" stilson, workbench and spring compressors
Strut to hub carrier 19mm Socket for nut, 18mm socket for bolt, plusgas, wire brush, aluminium or nylon hammer, replace M12 fine pitch nylocks.

Front Brake pads (renewal) fine nosed pliers, hammer, 4mm drift

Robot-fitted jubilee clips (spring type not the crimped ones used on heater matrix bleed valve) 3mm-wide flat bladed screwdriver to remove, good-quality plumber's wrench or fine nosed pliers to re-fit.

Bumper slide-in captive nuts and bolts (the big square rusty things that always seize up) 13mm socket, plusgas, good quality plumbers wrench. Soak threads weekend b4 you need to do job. Open wrench as wide as possible, then grip square head through plastic, undo nut or bolt. dont allow mounting to turn as they rip off the bumper. (n)

Rear trailling-arm bush renewal. Cling film & elastic band (over master cylinder reservoir), 13 & 11mm split-ring brake spanners & mole grips to undo brake flexies, 19mm socket & 19mm ratchet spanner to remove trailling arm, 5mm drill bit & drill to drill out rubber core of bush, 18tpi hacksaw, workbench, 3/8" cold chisel & engineer's hammer to remove steel bush outer, 300mm of m12 studding & some 1/4" steel plate to make a press to put new bush in.

Front track control arm bush renewal. Ball-joint splitter 13 15 & 17mm sockets to remove ARB & TCA. Workbench & 24" stilson to remove existing rear bush (they twist off). 5mm drill bit & drill to drill out rubber core of bush, 18tpi hacksaw, workbench, 3/8" cold chisel & engineer's hammer to remove steel front bush outer.

Almost everything else is achievable with 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 17 & 19mm sockets; a ball-pein and a really good soft-faced hammer, original mole grips, the best combination pliers you can afford and a selection of pozidrive bits. Oh, and a pint-mug of strong tea! (y)
