I was pulled over last night for driving with undercar neons switched on, the cop was pretty fair and said if I changed the front neon to white I could get away with it (Yeah, that would look great, 3 red, and 1 white????) could any1 give me the exact law that I am breaking because this subject seems to have many ideas about laws. Thanks.

The law he pulled you for was showing a red light to the front.

It's a bit heavy going and you will soon see why no one seems to know what to do about styling lights. In basic terms, most things not supplied as standard are illegal.

Thanks, Im still yet to find an exact law, but i suppose like most road laws, if it did end up in court, it'd be your my word against 2 police officers. I think Im going to go into the local police station and ask for an exact written copy of the law I was supposedly breaking. And nobody informed me of the law that states, police are allowed to turn into junctions without indicating, how about I give them 3 points for that, as they did it about 4 times last nite without their blue lights flashing.

I went down the local police station the other day to get the law about this off them.

here goes!

you cant have any exterior lighting on your car other than your standard lights and foglights. if foglights are on when not needed its illegal, if lights are tinted to much so they look a different colour when on, its illegal.

side repeaters must flash orange, if not there illegal.

any form of undercar lighting is illegal, no matter what colour. as for interior lighting, its all illegal including driving with your normal interior light on.

these rules only apply on public highways though. so as soon as u whip into a carpark you can spin your car like a biatch and light it up like a ufo and they cant touch you.

its all in that thing that polecat posted, but it's so difficult to understand, the policeman stood there read it out and dumbed it down for me!

hope this helps!

i think the main thing is, any red light on the front of the car is completely illegal, blue is allowed though, although undercar neons are banned when driving along. but seriosly, cops have super reflective strips all over the cars, if you cant spot them then you shouldnt be driving.

Except unmarked ones that is.

Anyway yeah you're dead right any modifications light-wise inside or out are not allowed to be switched on whilst driving.

I've got purple neons under the front and back of my Punto. I was driving through Sheffield the other night with them switched on, and a cop car stopped next to me at some traffic lights. The (rather sexy!) WPC in the passenger seat was looking at my car with some interest, so I expected them to maybe pull me about the neons (at least I hoped they would, this WPC was fine!). But they didn't; so I gave her a cheeky wink and raced them off the lights - no wheelspin, no speeding, just 0-40mph in the blink of an eye, bye bye 306DT :D
STILL didn't get pulled over! [}:)] What the hell do you have to do?? [8D][8D][8D]

Oh, and back to the topic...from what I've heard, the police will definitely pull you for having red neons on the front (as they might be confused with taillights), white ones on the back (might be confused with sidelights/reversing lights), or blue ones anywhere (the old "blue lights, imitating an emergency vehicle"). BUT, unless they are complete and utter b***ards, most coppers won't hassle you for green/yellow/orange/purple/UV. In theory they're all illegal, but the worst you're ever likely to get is a light b*ll*cking and be told to leave them off.

But is it really worth it. yes they look hot but the problem is once you get stopped it's against your name, yes this little mark has no affect against anything, but your likely to be stopped in the future. I got pulled twice last week, first time was because my music was too loud, the second was just a "spot check", but he bought up the fact that i'd been pulled a couple of days earlier. they were all right about it. they wernt acusing me of anything, just checked my details and let me go, but it made me late none the less. bit of pain.

"spot check" strange them once you get past a certain age you don't get them.
Strange that because theres a lot of older people driving about who have had a drink and the old bill say they can't just stop anyone without a good reason!

yeah what i thought too.

they seem to stop when you get older. I've seen cars swerving all over the place but that doesn't make any difference, because any one under 25 are the worst drivers off all aren't they!

Bugger! Gonna have to re-think my all red interior lights idea...

Thanks to everyone who replied, you were all a great help, one thing to say bout the "if you cant spot the police cars you shouldnt be driving" firstly, they use unmarked cars, as Dr_pepper mentioned, and secondly, if you're driving at night, if a cars behind you, all you can see clearly is headlights until its close, and in a police cars case, close enough to spot problems, especially neons, as Im sure all the other people who "shouldnt be driving" will agree.

Thanks again people.

Don't be doing handbrake turns even in a carpark, its a public area and you will get done for it, My mate had the choice of a driving improvement course (£110) or 3 points and £60 fine when they caught him :)

Damn right you'll get done for it! Yes it's a public area but at the same time it's private land, somebody owns the carpark.

Doing handbrake turns in a carpark is the same legal situation as doing it on someones front garden. If it's your front garden, fine, otherwise it's not fine. especially since it's a public area and clearly a risk to pedestrians!

Also the police can't give you a parking ticket for parking on double yellows if theyre on private land! which im now arguing out with the police after parking on double yellows at my college. My mates been let off and im just waiting for a reply. I'm sure they think we're just cash machines!!![:(!]

Ok, Just been down to the Road And Traffic department of my local police station, slightly intimidating, lots, and i mean LOTS of police cars and officers about, but did notice their fleet of unmarked cars, Im not sure if I would be legally allowed to tell you what they are but believe me, its not a fiesta, primera or volvo, but it is very quick.

Anyway, I got the exact law on neons (I say exact, its actually pretty vague) The only laws you offically break with undercar neons are; Showing a red light to the front, Showing white to the rear, Showing blue anywhere (dependant on what colour your neons are) But......I was told that its police officers discretion wether you are causing a distraction to other motorists in which case you will recieve a 30 pound fine, or a court appearance.

Apparently if more and more people do install undercar neons, then a law will be introduced that specifically states wether they will be legal or not, I think although this will probably mean they'll be illegal, it will make it clear wether they are legal or not.

Basically, as some people have already said, Don't drive round with neons switched on, park up and let them glow.

Hope this has helped.
