Hi all

Does any one have a guide which shows how to change a fuel pump. i checked the guides but couldn't see anything. I've got as far as removing the cover and disconnecting the wire but I tried to remove a pipe to get at the big locking nut and petrol come out so i panicked and put the pipe back and left it

Many thanks in advance oh car is mk1 punto sx 85 16v 1.2

You need to decompress the fuel 1st. Pull out the plug and start the car till it dies. Crank again and make sure it wont start. Now take the pipes off. To get the ring off use a hammer and chisel. Dont break it, use it to turn the ring anti clockwise. Screw it off and withdraw the pump. Be careful of leaking petrol

Is there anything else to be wary of. Anything at the bottom that I cant see that might break?

For the mk1 punto can i use any mk1 fuel pump or does it have to be from the same spec car?

Dude, if your pump is the same or similar fit as the Mk 2 then you need to make or borrow a tool.

I had to change mine recently and it was all but impossible using hammer/chisel/grips etc.

Only by pure chance that they had the correct tool where I work which I borrowed and did it in minutes.

To de-pressurise the system, look along the fuel rail on top of the engine and you should find a shrader valve similar to a tyre valve. With the keys out of the car, hold a cloth over it and press the centre with screw driver and it'll pee petrol out for a split second then its done.

But you need that tool mate :)

According to the aa man it has. Engine sparks but no fuel is getting through

blocked fuel filter will do this(y) - also alot easier to change than the pump

Also, to check fuel pump, when you turn the key to the ready state you can normally hear the fuel pump priming, if you can't hear this when everything is connected then fuel pump will be the most likely cause

yeah thanks for your advice, think i ll give the filter a change first coz it does prime and im guessing the filter is the next stage in the engine cycle after the pump.

am i right in thinking on a s reg punto sx85 its in front of the rear wheel?

right, wont hurt to look at the fuel filter as it is the cheaper option.

fingers crossed

it was running fairly low on fuel, you know what its like before pay day ha ha, wasnt completely empty having said that.

hopefully ive just sucked some crap in and blocked the filter.

running on empty isn't that bad, if you do it regually - like me:D - all the tank get drain everytime anyway so there isn't time for any crap to be left in the tank, so when it's next run on empty(y) - although you mustn't run the fuel pump when it's empty as it will break(n) - if it's in the tank, as they're designed to be filled with fuel all the time, and air will not put enough strain on them and it will work to fast and..... :( break..

Let us know how you get on(y) haynes manual says to hold a cloth over the nut you're undoing to sock up petrol - depressurising system spi model - single point injector engine, mpi engine will prob have a fuel rail with a depressurising thingy(y) - soz for bad spelling

The valve on the manifold is a shraeder like a tyre valve. De-pressurise it and remove the valve core. Now attach a fuel hose to a suitable container. Turn on the ignition and see if fuel is pumping through. If you can find a source of vacuum that could be good for sucking any trapped bubbles through.

guys, thank you so much for your help

fixing it on saturday so im gonna do the cheapest fix first, fuel filter then fuel pump if needs be. i can hear the pump prime so hopefully its the cheaper.

failing that the car is in for the mot next month so the mechanic can do the lot

will keep you informed

Guys, turned out to be the fuel pump. One of the leads on the pump had managed to snap off. Put a pump from an sx 60 into my sx 85. also changed the filter while there.

Getting a bit of a drop in power now. and again but in guessing its because its been sat up all week

Thank you for your help and advice
