Hi all

I don't see any forum posts on this type of brake noise but if you have experience please let me know your thoughts.

I'm going to document this issue here and update as I find a solution.

I have a punto mk2 1.2 16v ELX speedgear 2001, with a slight and very short occasional squeak on initial depression of the brake pedal. This sound only occurs at the very onset of braking and dissipates quickly.

first thoughts were obviously worn front pads and disks, however on initial inspection the pads/disks are not worn.

There is potential that rust and or cheap replacement pads/ disks may be at fault. or brake glazing.

Also, paranoia may have me imagining a scraping noise in line with wheel motion when I set off or this may be part of the issue.

Secondary thoughts are to either strip down the front brakes and take a better look and reassemble, or to move on to check the rear drums (which I hate working on).

Any better ideas?

Cheers

Hi

Nice model youve got there :)

It SOUNDS like 'rattle'..

Where the pad is skipping on contact with the disc..

Fine when firmly pressed..or with no pressure.. but light pressure gives the 'chatter'

Strip AND take notice of the chromey clips.. they are to dampen rattling.. and go on the UPHILL edge of the brake pads.

Let us know what you find :)

I dont have any squealing on my car but I noticed the ends of the pistons are rusting while the parts under the rubber seals are like new. As the cars age the rusty part is never going to be completely flat and so the pad is not going to be equally pressed. To try and stop the rust I have filled up the boot with brake grease and covered the ends of the pistons with copper paste.
