This car has been trouble and only had it for 5 days!!

Now it won't start!

Went to start car this morning and instrument panel showed up until tried to turn it over. They blinked and nothing happened. Put it down to battery. Tried jump starting - nothing. Tried jump leads - nothing. Took terminals off ad connected jump leads - nothing.

So seems battery isn't problem!!

Problem is i haven't got a clue what it could be now!!!?!??!

Any ideas?

Car is waiting to be picked up by gararge but if anyone can advise me before they pick it up and charge me a fortune is there anything else i can do????

PLE£SE

Cheers

i can hear the usual sounds that normally happen prior to starting the car such as petrol pump starting etc. Amber key light on instrument panel also goes off as usual. It just won't attempt to judder or anything. its as if there's no juice in the battery.
Lights in car also dim the longer i leave door open.

But when try to bypass battery with jump leads to battery connectors it still won't start.

hmmm lighst dimming do sound like battery, hmmm but you tried jump leads so that no good. was wondering if start motor gone for it, i would say try push starting it but you aint supposed to do that in a car with cat as it may damage it. anyone know if thats safe to try?

my sister had aporblem were wouldnt do anythng with jump leads or anythiung it turned out to be wire going to start motor.

When you attached the jump leads did you leave it a few mins before trying to start it ? Also i would double check your battery and make sure the cells ( if its not the sealed type) are not dry. I had this problem with mine, not starting and even when jump starting it had to be left a few mins before it would fire up and start. Ive since topped my battery up, charged it and now it fine.

did the jump leads have a decent connection? On my car the battery terminals are a sod to get to, and if there isnt enough of the lead touching the terminal then it won't start (it melts the clip instead!) Maybe worth checking ur battery terminals are on tight as well.

Have you tried bump starting the car? If you suspect starter, try clouting it with a spanner or something and then trying to start the car.

ok,first of all,do not connect the neg jump lead to the battery direct.find a good earth.second,on the donar car, once connected up,rev the car for a minute or two.this will get some charge in the battery.then whilst engine reving constantly, try starting the car.it should start.if not, either lead to starter or from starter to ignition suspect.

you only conect the red + jump lead to battery on the dead car, the black - should go from battery on the good car to a nice earth point on the engine of the dead car

oh yeah, i forgot about that. I connect the -ve jump lead to the block shown in the picture attached. 4awg connection to main earth, twin 8awg connection to the inner wings and then the normal OE connection to the battery.

Why is it that you're not meant to connect to the -ve battery terminal, i've often wondered this.

i think it kills alternators, not sure but you get a better start if you earth to engine anyway, you also not supposed to push start a car with a cat, but i forget why

edit earth jump on dead car should be certain distance from battery, i think its a foot, tells you in every haynes manual though :)

Cheers guys.

Got new battery in end for £26 and fitted no problem.

Knackered battery have out reading of 4.12 volts if correct!!!

Never gave a hint of packing in though till wouldn't start at all!

Cheers again
Matt

Where did you get your battery from ? Most places near me are quoting £50 + as they are now priced to include the (eventual) disposal cost..

Oh yes, the reason that you are supposed to make the last connection to an earth point and not the battery is because of the inevitable spark, and possible explosion from hydrogen produced by the battery. No sure what's supposed to happen when you drop your spanner on the battery and it sparks, though ! :D

SHMOAN....

Just reading my posts and replies.

Bought battery from place in rhosddu (WREXHAM).

Very cheap!!
