Hi!

New to the forums. So basically yesterday my Punto Mk2 1.2L 8v 2002 started making a squeling noise when I press the clutch pedal to change gears, and then it goes away. I would describe the noise as a belt or something. I have looked online and found this could be the throw out bearing or pilot bearing, depending if sound occurs when slightly or fully depressing clutch (unfortunately I did not notice when sound came on).

Today, just 1 day after, after driving a bit, suddenly when pressing the clutch to shift gears, I feel a very strong vibration on pressing the clutch a bit, and I could not fully depress the clutch (vibrations were so strong) and hence change gears. Car works normally in neutral though and no sounds or vibrations. Also, if this helps, when car is off I can shift gears.

I have just changed my clutch including throw out bearing 2 years ago. What do you think is happening please guys? I would really appreciate your help!

Thanks a lot,

Most likely ,that the release bearing has worn the clutch fingers away,so will need a new clutch kit.If bearing in box goes you get an oil leak out of the bell housing.

Thanks a lot for your reply!

I did not get the last part where you said something about a bearing in a box and oil coming out..can you explain please?

Also, do you think this could have anything to do with flywheel or pilot bearing?

Thanks a lot!

The main shaft bearings sometimes go on these gear boxes, the box will be noisy, the shaft then moves up/down/left to right causing the seal to fail and so leaks oil out from the bell housing. So if you have no leak,it's only a clutch /clutch bearing problem.

what brand of clutch kit did you put in and how many km in those 2 years

Thanks multipete!

The Brand was Quinton Hazzell (QH). The Clutch Kit I bought now is Valeo. I think about 10-15,000km. Thanks!

SOLVED!

So I finally opened it and fixed it. The problem was the throw out/release bearing sleeve. It has a metal sleeve inside where it makes contact with the input shaft. This was all kind of bent a bit at the edges like it was crushed or pressed at points.

What I think is the cause is this. 1.5 years ago, when I changed the clutch, I think the guy I bought it from didn't give me the right model. In fact, when I matched the new one with the one installed, the pressure plate width/depth did not match. The old QH one was deeper/wider. This, I think, made constant pressure with the release bearing and worn it out very prematurely. In fact, when I started driving it the first time I changed the clutch 1.5 years ago, there was a very bad smell which I thought was due to a new clutch until it breaks in.

Lesson learned: Always buy using the chassis number not just the model and year. Also, match up when refitting with an after market. Unfortunately I was a bit too excited or rushed and somehow didnt match it up very good last time. Also, I did not use any grease last time. That might have had something to do with all did, I'm not sure.

Running perfectly now, very happy.

Thanks for your help guys.
